Provincial police East Region special detail unit stopped a driver who was caught speeding on Hwy 417 near Anderson Road in the east end on Thursday evening.

Feeling generous, the officer used their discretion and issued the driver a ticket for having an obstructed licence plate instead of the costlier speeding offence. The charge carries a $110 fine.

To show their gratitude, the driver took the ticket, “then accelerated away so fast that the vehicle left a (40-metre) rubber strip on the road.”

Police gave chase, and the driver was stopped again and handed the full “stunt driving” package.

The driver now faces a minimum $2,000 fine and six demerit points, as well as a one-year driving prohibition upon conviction.

Their license was suspended for 30 days, and their vehicle was impounded for 14 days.
