Alberta’s police watchdog is investigating after Grande Prairie RCMP officers fatally shot a suspect driver after he attempted to flee a traffic stop.

According to a Saturday release from RCMP, about 11:50 p.m. Friday, officers in Grande Prairie tried to stop a vehicle being driven in an erratic fashion.

Mounties said that the driver fled when officers tried to stop the vehicle, which soon became stuck in the mud.

“When officers interacted with the male driver, he produced a firearm,” the release said. “During the confrontation, at least one officer discharged their service weapon, and the suspect was struck.”

Despite life-saving efforts by officers, the suspect was declared dead on scene when EMS arrived, the release said, adding that no officers were hurt during the incident.

The Albeta Serious Incident Response Team — which investigates cases of severe injury or death when police are involved, or cases of police misconduct — is looking into the circumstances around the shooting.
