UK VFX house Jellyfish Pictures has suspended all operations and is currently exploring options for either a sale or large scale investment.
The company released a statement late yesterday after news broke of the company halting operations in the local press in India, where the company has a production outfit. The statement said the company had been “battling hard in the face of strong headwinds over the past twelve months. The long-tail impact of Covid, coupled with rising costs and the fall-out from the writer and actor strikes, have had a profound effect on our business.”
“Over recent months, we’ve been working closely with our key stakeholders to find a path forward, including exploring all options for sale and investment, with the aim of putting in place a strong financial platform upon which we can build,” the statement said. “While we continue to engage in these discussions and explore our options, we have today taken legal steps to protect the position of the business while we strive to find a way forward.”
Jellyfish first launched in 2001. The company had credits on many studio projects like The Woman King, Watchmen, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story alongside titles like Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City and The Wonderful Story Of Henry Sugar. They recently worked on the upcoming Black Mirror series and Kate Winslet’s Lee. As of June 2024, the company had also launched an outpost in Canada alongside it’s Indian off-shoot.
Jellyfish is the latest VFX company to halt operations. Last month, Technicolor filed for administration. The company’s global headcount was between 4,000-10,000.
