B.C. independent investigator into police incidents that lead to injury or death says charges should be considered in a pedestrian crash last year involving a Vancouver police officer.

The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. has filed a report with the B.C. Prosecution Service about the collision on May 21, 2024, which left a man with serious injuries.

About a half-hour after midnight, the officer was driving east on East Hastings Street near Dunlevy Avenue when the police vehicle hit a pedestrian, who was taken to hospital.

The IIO opened an investigation.

After reviewing the evidence, chief civilian director Jessica Berglund “determined that reasonable grounds exist to believe that the officer may have committed driving offences in relation to the use of their vehicle,” said the IIO in a statement on Monday. Berglund did not say what potential charges will be considered.

In order to approve any charges, the prosecution service must believe “there is a substantial likelihood of conviction based on the evidence gathered by the IIO,” and that prosecuting the case is in the public interest.

Ridge Meadows RCMP have seized what it call a “significant quantity” of suspected illegal drugs and several guns during an investigation into a man allegedly uttering threats and possessing weapons.

On the afternoon of March 20, Mounties arrested a 29-year-old man. After the arrest, a regional emergency response team was called in to help search a home in the 11700-block of 256th Street in Maple Ridge.

A large amount of suspected psilocybin (mushrooms) was found on the property, and “multiple loaded firearms were located unsafely stored inside the residence,” said police.
