A cyclist has died after a crash with a car north of Brisbane.

The 39-year-old Brighton man came off his bike about 4.50am yesterday on Deception Bay Road, Deception Bay.

Investigators believe a Hyundai I30 was involved.

The cyclist was taken to Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital with critical injuries. Queensland Police confirmed he died hours later.

The 51-year-old male driver of the Hyundai was not injured.

Detectives are appealing for anyone who witnessed the crash or has CCTV to come forward.

A Brisbane ferry has reportedly been evacuated this morning, with passengers telling Brisbane Times it appeared to be taking on water.

About 40 people were asked to get off the 8.01am CityCat service from Hawthorne to Riverside.

“[It] felt like it was going to sink and water seemed to be coming on,” a passenger says.

“Bit of an ongoing issue as they are so overcrowded.”

Brisbane Times has contacted Translink and Brisbane City Council for further information.

A woman has been charged with murder after allegedly using prescription medication to “accelerate” the death of a man.

The 56-year-old male died at a property in Alexandra Hills before 10pm on December 7, 2023.

Police say investigations into the cause were extremely complex, with inquiries made into his health and treatment prior to death.

Yesterday officers attended a home in Alexandra Hill and arrested a 50-year-old woman. She was charged with murder.

Police allege the man has been in the last stages of his life, however the woman administered lethal levels of prescription medication to accelerate his death.

She is due to appear in Brisbane Magistrates Court today.

Deputy Premier Jarrod Bleijie will attend a town hall meeting on the Gold Coast this month as the government considers whether to proceed with stage four of the light rail system.

In parliament yesterday, Bleijie again accused the former Labor government of failing to tell local residents that 235 properties would be resumed, and 1000 car parks lost, in a project that had blown out from $4.46 billion to $7.6 billion.

Since reopening public consultation on the project two weeks ago, there have been 2700 submissions, and Bleijie said the LNP government would be more transparent about its plans.

“The people of the southern Gold Coast deserve a world-class public transport system,” he said, without speculating on the mode or route.

The government recently broke its promise to extend heavy rail to Maroochydore by 2032, instead proposing to take it to Birtinya where commuters could switch to a Metro-style rapid bus running to Sunshine Coast Airport at Marcoola.

Police have arrested a man they suspect was involved in a shooting at Surfers Paradise on Monday.

Police were called to a block of units on Peninsula Drive about 2am on Monday, where they found a 44-year-old father and his two adult sons injured from an alleged incident with a neighbour.

The 44-year-old suffered lacerations across his body, while one of his sons, aged 21, was shot twice in the stomach, and had a cut running along his upper back.

The other son, a 23-year-old, suffered minor injuries.

Police launched a search on Monday, and about 1pm yesterday a 30-year-old man was taken into custody in Palm Meadows.

Officers said the man was “assisting detectives with their inquiries”, and investigations were continuing.

Rangers are investigating how three people were attacked by multiple dingoes on K’gari on Tuesday afternoon.

The women in their 20s were part of two separate tour groups, and were walking from Lake Wabby in the tourist spot formerly known as Fraser Island when they were bitten.

All suffered minor lacerations to their lower legs and were taken to an ambulance station just before 6pm after being treated by guides. They chose not to go to hospital.

Government workers believe the dogs may have been tagged, and have launched an investigation into the incident.

“Rangers will continue to patrol the area and provide … education to residents and visitors,” a statement from the Department of the Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation said.

Attacks of multiple people on the island are rare. A spokesperson for Queensland Ambulance told this masthead earlier it was unclear why the incident occurred.

A parliamentary committee will consider the Crisafulli government’s proposed changes to Jack’s Law, which would allow police to conduct wanding operations potentially anywhere and with less paperwork.

Introducing the bill yesterday afternoon, Police Minister Dan Purdie told parliament the current regulatory requirements were “an inefficient and time-consuming process that diverts police resources away from frontline crime prevention”.

Under the amendments, senior police would no longer have to conduct evidentiary and subjective tests before authorising wanding operations in areas specified by law.

They would only need to have intelligence that searching for knives in any public place was “likely to detect, or deter, the commission of an offence”.

Purdie, a former police officer, said “changing circumstances” obligated the government to make police operations more efficient and effective.

“The balance between safety and civil liberties remains paramount,” he said.

“We will always do our utmost to protect the human rights of Queenslanders.”

After the showers barely let up in Brisbane yesterday, don’t expect too much blue sky to follow today, with the Bureau of Meteorology forecasting a 70 per cent chance of showers.

But unlike yesterday’s solid falls, up to just 5 millimetres is expected.

And the temperature will return to a more usual top of 28 today, after yesterday’s plunge to 23.

Looking forward, we aren’t expecting a sunny day until next week.
