The investment, totalling $5 million over five years, will enhance the museum’s programming and operations, ensuring that the achievements of Canada’s athletes continue to inspire future generations.

As part of its 2024 Fall Economic Statement, the federal government committed the funds that will also allow the Hall of Fame to expand its reach, allowing more Canadians to engage with the stories of Canada’s greatest sports figures, the museum said in a statement.

“We are deeply grateful for this investment and thrilled to continue working with the federal government to inspire and unite Canadians,” Cheryl Bernard, president and CEO of Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame, said in a statement. “We’re not just preserving history — we’re bringing it to life through digital exhibits, engaging storytelling and public nominations for the Order of Sport, celebrating sport as a powerful force for inclusion, leadership and national pride.”

In an email, Bernard called the announcement a “historic moment” for the museum, marking the first time the organization has secured significant multi-year federal support.

“It’s a huge win for our organization and the result of many years of lobbying and advocacy,” she said. “To say it’s a relief would be an understatement.”

Canada Sports Hall of Fame, located in Calgary’s WinSport complex along Canada Olympic Road S.W., has been a cultural institution in the city for 70 years.

Its mission is “to celebrate Canada’s sports heroes who have reached the pinnacle of their careers and are going ‘beyond the win’ and making monumental contributions to our society.”

The funding ensures that the legacy of Canada’s sporting greats remains accessible and inspiring for generations to come, the museum said.
