Mounties have arrested a man after an excavator was used to smash several police cruisers at an RCMP detachment in Bonnyville on Saturday night.

Just before 7 p.m. a stolen trackhoe went into the parking lot of the RCMP detachment in Bonnyville and dumped several boulders in front of the prisoner bay before damaging five police cars that were parked in the lot, said police in a news release Sunday.

RCMP said a suspect fled on foot but officers were able to use the services of a police dog to track down a man a short time later in a treeline northwest of the detachment.

“He was still in the area, so our police dog was able to pick his scent up from the trackhoe and we were able to find and arrest the suspect,” said Alberta RCMP Cpl. Gina Slaney.

Slaney said at this time the suspect can’t be named, but he’s currently in custody pending a judicial interim release hearing.

It’s expected that RCMP will release more information about this incident on Monday.

“Incidents like this would be frightening for any community, but we want to stress that there is no further harm or risk to the community,” said Slaney.

“Soon we’ll be able to give a full update and potentially the reason behind the cause of such a crime.”
