Heartache as ‘wonderful, smart, talented pupil’ dies suddenly amid tributes for ‘kind hearted’ girl, 12

HEARTBREAKING tributes have been paid to a “wonderful, smart, talented pupil” and “loving and devoted daughter” who tragically passed away this week.

Jannah Shahzad, 12, from Brookview in Tallaght, Co Dublin, passed away at her home surrounded by her loving family on Thursday.

A heartbreaking notice described the young woman as a “loving and devoted daughter” who is deeply missed by her family, friends and teachers.

It reads: “Shahzad, Jannah, (Heavenly Blessed 3 April 2025) Brookview, Tallaght, at home, surrounded by her loving family; loving and devoted daughter to Katrina and Mohammad and adored sister of Kelly, Gerard, Daniyal and Ahmed.

“Jannah will be forever loved and very sadly missed by her heartbroken family, mam, dad, sister, brothers, aunts, uncles, cousins, Kelly’s partner Craig, Gerard’s partner Alex, extended family especially in Pakistan, teachers and her many friends in St Thomas Senior School, the wider community of Brookview and neighbours.”

She will repose at her home on Monday from 3pm to 6pm, a service to celebrate her life will take place on Tuesday in the temple in Newlands Cross at 9am, followed by burial in Newcastle Cemetery.

Jannah was a sixth-class pupil at St Thomas’ SNS in Jobstown, where she was well-known and loved by her peers – and she exceeded her studies and embodied what the school stands for.

After the news of her tragic death came to light, the school staff issued a letter to parents on Friday, notifying them about the tragedy and how they enforced support structures to help students cope.

They pointed out that classes will “continue as usual” but know that the next few days will “be difficult for everyone” as they process the tragic news.

Her death has sent shockwaves through the local community, with family, friends and loved ones paying tribute to Jannah in heartbreaking messages.

John Rennick, St Thomas’ SNS principal, said: “Jannah was a wonderful, smart, talented pupil who embodied what St Thomas’ SNS stands for. She contributed to all aspects of school life, was admired and liked by everyone she met.”

‘KIND AND CARING GIRL’

Michael Mangan, class teacher from St Thomas’ SNS, said: “Jannah, In a room full of shining stars yours shone among the brightest! A diligent, humorous, kind and caring girl! The impact you had on your classmates and I is immeasurable!

“You will always hold a place in all of our hearts and in the whole school community. Your passion for being kind to people was your strongest trait!

“You loved the GAA and it was great to see you prosper on the school team and St Marks. Condolences to the Shazad family at this sad time. You will be missed by all.”

Suzanne O’Reilly, Principal of St Thomas JNS Primary School, added: “On behalf of the staff and pupils of St Thomas’ JNS I offer our sincere condolences to Jannah’s parents, Katrina and Mohammad, and to her sister Kelly, brothers, Gerard, Daniyal and Ahmedand and all of her family.

“Our thoughts are with you all at this incredibly difficult time. We are thinking also of Jannah’s classmates, teacher and all our colleagues in St Thomas’ SNS.

“We remember Jannah with great fondness and affection from her time in the junior school. May Jannah rest in peace.”

‘MARK OF RESPECT’

Dublin Camogie paid tribute to Jannah, saying: “It is with the heaviest of hearts that we inform you of the tragic passing of one of St Marks U14’s players,Jannah Shahzad.

“On behalf of all in Dublin Camogie, we offer our sincere condolences on the tragic passing of Jannah. Our thoughts are with all of Jannah’s family and all her teammates in St Marks.

“As a mark of respect all Féile venues, all finals on Sunday, alongside all club games under the control of Dublin Camogie will observe a minutes silence before all games this weekend.

“Jannah will also be remembered at our national congress this weekend.”

Cllr Alan Hayes for South Dublin County Council added: “My sincere condolences to all of Jannah’s family and friends. Across her schooling and sporting endeavours, it is clear how much of a positive impact Jannah has had on all who knew her.

“May her family and friends find all the love and strength they need in the times ahead. Rest in Peace.”

‘SADLY MISSED’

A heartbroken parent of a classmate wrote: “Beautiful Jannah , your smile would light up a room , your kindness never went unnoticed -you will be sadly missed.”

A close pal added: “Jannah was such a good friend she was so kind and always cared about others. I hope she gets the best bed in heaven. We will miss her so much always in our hearts forever.

A class friend said: “Jannah was a very funny and sweet friend. She always wanted everyone to be included in games. She was a great friend to everyone, and I loved having her as my friend.

“School won’t be the same without her, and I’m sorry to her family, and I’m thinking of u all xx.”
