City-building needs to happen in the ‘burbs’ too

There are a couple of “cool ” neighbourhoods in Ottawa, sadly none of which are in the ‘burbs’. I live in Nepean in a mid-sixties area close to Merivale Road.

This area is really ugly and has only strip malls, huge parking lots out front (which necessitate driving to shop) and cavernous shopping spaces (mostly chain outlets and grocery stores.)

They are a blight on the landscape. We are seeing more condo and apartment developments on the strip and clearly people want to live here as evidenced by the builders putting up buildings.

I wish Ottawa city planners started paying attention to these suburban ” deserts” where there are no restaurants that are worth visiting unless you want fast food, noodle shops or shawarma. They could also change zoning to improve the look of the strip by stipulating that parking lots be located in the back of the store. These small changes would vastly improve the look of the street and perhaps it would start a change to make our street more user-friendly. People could actually see what the shops are selling if they were set closer to the street. More trees and greener would also improve the area.

Interestingly, the population in this area is undergoing a renaissance with young families moving in with disposable income and the desire to enjoy a sit-down meal in a nice restaurant. How about it councillors and Mr. Mayor?

Nation’s capital cannot provide decent transit

Article content

Dining on Saturday in a Westboro restaurant, looking out on Richmond Road, I was able to witness another ridiculous managing of OC Transpo. Saturday night! An incessant procession of mostly articulated buses going in all directions and empty.

Article content

Mayor Sutcliffe and his council have failed completely to handle the OC Transpo file which would require a cleanup of incapable staff from top to bottom. It is a disgrace that the nation’s capital cannot even provide decent, predictable transit system.
