Jean Smart Returning To Broadway This Summer In World Premiere Play ‘Call Me Izzy’​on March 10, 2025 at 2:33 pm

Hacks star Jean Smart will return to Broadway this summer in the world premiere of Jamie Wax’s darkly comedic play Call Me Izzy.

The 12-week limited engagement will play at Broadway’s Studio 54 from May 24 – August 17 with an opening night set for June 12. Directing will be Sarna Lapine (Sunday in the Park with George).

While Smart is best known for her beloved TV role Designing Women and her Emmy-winning performances in Hacks, she launched her Broadway career in 1981 in Piaf and returned the stage in the 2000 Broadway production The Man Who Came To Dinner. She earned a Tony nomination for the latter performance.

Smart has been a part of several developmental readings of Call Me Izzy, described as “a darkly comedic story about one woman in rural Louisiana who has a secret that is both her greatest gift and her only way out. It is a moving tour de force portrait of a woman who resists being silenced by embracing her tenacity, humor, and fiery imagination.”

Author Was was a longtime CBS journalist who went on to write, with Paul Taranto, the celebrated musical Evangeline, which aired nationally on PBS.

Producing Call Me Izzy are Robert Ahrens and P3 Productions/Ben Holtzman, Sammy Lopez, and Fiona Howe Rudin.

Though Roundabout Theatre Company owns Studio 54, Call Me Izzy is not a Roundabout production.
