How would you rate the mayoral candidates? Vote in our daily poll! I am so angry at these Alberta teachers who decided to vote against the latest offer from the Alberta government. Are they all out of touch with reality? They have been offered 12 percent over four years. Most Albertans are not offered that.

I am so angry at these Alberta teachers who decided to vote against the latest offer from the Alberta government. Are they all out of touch with reality? They have been offered 12 percent over four years. Most Albertans are not offered that. Most Albertans are not standing with you. You have caused a lot of financial difficulties for your families who have children. Thanks a lot for your thoughtless actions.

(This will get testier before things calm down.)

Clocking speeders

We have the cash cow argument against radar-issued speeding tickets. What a load that argument is. Speeders deserve to be caught and punished. I saw an interview with a police sergeant, years ago, in Calgary, who was being interviewed at a school crosswalk and here is his observation: “I’m always startled at how many mothers, delivering kids to school, are given a speeding ticket in a school zone.”

Alternative options

Re “Carney should adopt Tories’ position on nicotine pouches” (Jay Goldberg, Sept. 26): As a convenience store operator for more than 30 years, I know my customers by name. I see them every day, and I hear their stories about wanting to quit smoking. It’s frustrating when they tell me they can buy illegal, unregulated nicotine pouches online or on the street, while my store is prohibited from selling what has become a very popular and effective alternative to smoking. Retailers like us play by the rules. We check IDs, follow strict regulations, and work hard to keep age-restricted products out of the hands of youth. And when the government makes it harder for consumers to get safer, regulated products, then illegal, untaxed and unregulated alternatives start to flood the market. Making nicotine pouches conveniently available at the local corner store — the same place smokers already go for products like nicotine gum and patches — just makes sense. It would give adults who want to quit smoking easy access to something that is proven to be effective. Small stores like mine are on the front lines of this issue every day. Governments should let us be part of the solution. Smoking rates could continue to decline if all alternatives were readily available.

(It is the logical course of action. The Liberals are hearing it from consumers and industry.)
