Influencer Louise Cooney has found herself caught up in the US TikTok ban due to an unfortunate mistake she made years ago.
The blogger and mum-of-one, 32, logged into the video-sharing platform at the weekend to find she was locked out of TikTok – despite the app still being available in Ireland – and she soon discovered the unfortunate reason why.
Before her account was banned on the app, she had 23k followers and 303k likes. While her account is still visible from Ireland, where TikTok is still available, Louise cannot access it as she is set up as a US user.
The Limerick native lived in the US for one year after making a big move to New York City in 2019 but her American dream was cut short by Covid when she moved home in 2020. However, she set up her TikTok account while she was living in the United States as the app was gaining popularity ahead of the pandemic.
She shared a screenshot of her blocked TikTok account on Sunday, writing: ‘How mad? I thought the ban was just in the US.. I can’t access mine? Anyone else?’
Louise later realised her mistake, sharing in an update: ‘Ahhh apparently it’s because I set my account up while I lived in the states [sad face emoji]. I didn’t even know that. I wish I’d thought of that yesterday.’
The TikTok ban in the United States came into effect on Sunday, January 19, making it illegal for American internet services to support or distribute it.
A message to US TikTok users appeared on the app reading: ‘A law banning TikTok has been enacted in the U.S. Unfortunately, that means you can’t use TikTok for now.
‘We are fortunate that President Trump has indicated that he will work with us on a solution to reinstate TikTok once he takes office. Please stay tuned!’
For now, Louise has set up a back-up account but is hoping to be able to recover her account… fingers crossed!
