Mal McBurney: Man who died in fall at Dunmurry flats named locally as west Belfast rapper

A man who died following a fall from a block of flats has been named locally as west Belfast rap artist and dancer, Mal McBurney.

Police remained at the scene of the sudden death at Redwood Court in the Dunmurry area of the city on Thursday. They were alerted at around 3.20pm on Wednesday.

Tributes were paid online to the rapper, who went by the name Mal Mc. One described the young man as an individual with a “heart of gold”.

Following his death, police warned about speculation on social media following Mr McBurney’s death.

In a statement, police said “We are in the very early stages of our investigation to ascertain the circumstances and a post-mortem examination will be progressed in due course,” they said.

“To assist with our investigation, we would appeal to the public to come forward with any information they may have in relation to this incident.

“Were you in the Redwood Court area yesterday between 12 and 4pm and witnessed any persons in the area which could assist our investigation?

“I am also aware of speculation on social media platforms connected to this incident. I would caution against any speculation and ask that if you have any information that could assist us, to get in contact.

Mr McBurney is from a large and well-known family in the area.
