A man is dead following a brawl that occurred outside a Calgary bar early Saturday morning and led to three possible stabbings, multiple foot chases involving the canine unit and street closures.

Calgary police were called to the 700 block of 10 Avenue S.W. at approximately 1:55 a.m. after receiving reports of what they described as a “large fight.”

Officers found numerous people who were injured. Two were taken to the hospital — one was in a stable condition, while the other was declared dead on the scene. A third person with stab wounds soon arrived at the hospital in a stable condition. Police are trying to confirm if the third person was a victim of the incident.

Multiple witnesses and suspects fled the area on foot before the police’s arrival. Officers then chased down four individuals and took them into custody. Police say investigators are now working to determine the involvement of these individuals in the incident.

An autopsy of the deceased has been scheduled with the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for Tuesday.

Police at the scene told reporters the fight began at the Commonwealth pub and stretched down the strip on 10th Avenue. A parking meter near the bar was also streaked with blood. A footage from a nearby bottle depot viewed by Postmedia shows a man chasing down another individual outside a condo building and attacking him. The clip was followed by a group of younger men fleeing the scene.

Shane Willet, a bystander, is worried for his stepson, who frequents the area on weekends.

“He comes out to bars. He’s pretty he’s he’s laid back… but if these people are carrying knives and guns and stuff like that, you never know what’s gonna happen,” Willet said.

Another bystander who didn’t want to be named said, despite the tragedy, he doesn’t think the area is more dangerous than he previously thought.

“It’s two in the morning when bars go out and everyone’s heated and outside, it leads to complications, so sometimes things escalate,” he said.

“I think if you’re conscious of where you’re walking, you should be OK, but I don’t think that downtown Calgary is necessarily an unsafe place.”
