Reports of smoke prompts evacuation at Miami Beach Senior High School​on April 9, 2025 at 2:50 pm

Students and staff were safely evacuated Wednesday morning after smoke was reported inside a building at Miami Beach Senior High School, prompting a response from firefighters and police, authorities confirmed.

According to Miami Beach Fire Rescue, crews arrived at the school, located at 2231 Prairie Ave., just before 8 a.m., and found white light smoke coming from the second and third floors of Building 2.

They said the smoke was quickly contained to that area.

Authorities confirmed that the building has been closed as crews work to determine the source of the smoke. The school’s backup generator is currently supplying power to the rest of the campus.

Officials with MBFR, Florida Power & Light, and building maintenance personnel remained at the scene as of mid-Wednesday morning.

Video from Sky 10 flew over the scene around 10 a.m., showing students and police officers outside as the evacuation unfolded.

No other details about the incident were immediately released.
