An 18-year-old man has been charged in relation to a downtown stabbing that occurred Friday evening in the 700 block of 4 St. S.E.

The victim, a man in his 40s, was stabbed in the back and found in the restroom of a Tim Hortons by restaurant staff shortly after 8 p.m. on Friday. He was transported to the hospital in life-threatening condition, and is currently in serious but stable condition.

Suspect arrested, allegedly found with illegal cigarettes

On Sunday afternoon, Community Engagement Response Team (CERT) officers arrested a man who matched the description of the suspect provided by witnesses and CCTV images. Upon his arrest, he was found with more than 1,200 unstamped illegal cigarettes in his possession.

The man was identified as Owen Antonio Cruz Lafond, 18, and has been charged with aggravated assault and fraud under $5,000. He is scheduled to appear in court on April 2.

Police believe the two men did not know each other, but an interaction inside the restaurant preceded the physical confrontation outside.
