Two cars full of people may have pulled over to fix a mechanical failure moments before they were struck in the crash that killed a woman and left multiple others fighting for life overnight.

A Toyota HiAce hit the stationary Honda Odyssey and Hyundai Imax from behind on Gympie Arterial Road at Bald Hills about 9.40pm, Sunday.

One woman in the Honda died at the scene. Everyone of the other 10 travellers was hospitalised, with three men in life-threatening condition.

Queensland Police confirmed they are investigating how the Toyota van hit the vehicles, and its driver has spoken to officers.

“We believe [the stationary car occupants] may have been attending to a mechanical issue,” Inspector Gareth Bosley said on Monday.

“It’s always an extremely confronting scene for our personnel.

“We would ask for anyone who has dashcam footage along that stretch of road last night around 9:40pm to … come forward.”

The seven other casualties comprised three women in their 20s, a woman in her 40s, a man in his 30s and two other men.

Emergency services and recovery crews remained at the scene, with the southbound lane not reopened for four hours.
