Two women, 20s, injured after jeep crash in Co Offaly as driver flees scene and Gardai in Toyota Hi-Lux appeal

TWO women have been rushed to hospital after a jeep crash in Co Offaly and the driver failed to stay at the scene.

Gardai and emergency services responded to reports of the crash at approximately 11.50pm on Thursday, April 3.

Cops are appealing for witnesses to the single-vehicle road traffic collision involving a jeep on Main Street, Daingean, Co Offaly.

The driver of the jeep failed to remain at the scene.

Two female passengers of the vehicle in their 20s were conveyed to Midland Regional Hospital Tullamore for treatment of serious injuries.

It is believed that their injuries are non-life-threatening at this time.

A technical examination of the scene was completed by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators.

Gardai are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this collision to come forward – and are in particular injured in a Toyota Hi-Lux.

In a statement, a spokesperson said: “Road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling in the Daingean, Co. Offaly area, between 8pm and 11.50pm, are asked to make this footage available to investigating Gardaí.”

“Gardaí are particularly interested in the movements of a white 172L registered Toyota Hi-Lux in the area at this time.

“Anyone with information is asked to contact Tullamore Garda Station at (057) 9327600, the Garda Confidential Line at 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.”

It comes after another crash on a major Irish motorway this morning.

DUBLIN TRAFFIC

The crash took place on a main road heading into Dublin, causing congestion in both directions.

The collision occurred on the M3/N3 between Junction 2 Blanchardstown and Junction 1 M50/N3 southbound.

Lane two was affected but the incident has since been cleared, with drivers still warned over delays.

Further traffic has built up this morning on Dublin’s M50 in both directions as drivers are being warned of congestion across the city.

Transport Infrastructure Ireland has reminded commuters that the Jack Lynch Tunnel will be closed overnight.

The full tunnel will be impacted to drivers from 9pm tonight until 4am tomorrow morning.

This comes as Gardai, alongside the Road Safety Authority, started a 24-hour speed enforcement operation nationwide at midnight last night.

SLOW DOWN APPEAL

Gardai ask drivers to slow down as an increase of “vulnerable road users, pedestrians and cyclists” are out during longer daylight hours.

They said: “In advance of this National Slow Down Day we are asking people to have a conversation with those around you about speed, driving safely and helping to make sure everyone using Irish roads arrives back home safely.

“This is a conversation that should be had regularly with friends, family and colleagues, and should not only take place in the aftermath of fatal road traffic collision when it is too late.

“Speeding while driving is one of the most dangerous driving practices there are because the faster the speed the more severe the impact and the much deadlier the consequences.”
