Re: Down The Aisle, Out The Door; My mom lost her job for marrying. Six decades later, I asked the company for an apology, March 9

My parents married in September 1939. On their wedding day, my mother, a dedicated nurse, was fired. She was told that now that she was married and had a man at home, she no longer needed a job.

There was no “man at home.” My dad was a lieutenant in the Canadian Navy, not at home. And he was often “not at home” for too long.

When I was five months pregnant, it was suggested to me that perhaps it was best to now stay at home. No one wants to see a pregnant teacher.

I am very thankful that these horrid practices are now obsolete!

A TEAR IN MY EYE

Watching Justin Trudeau give one of his last tearful speeches, I could actually feel a pain in my heart as a tear rolled down my face.

It was only then that I realized I shouldn’t have had that second bowl of Mexican chili, covered in Sriracha sauce.

Well, it’s one down and a whole lot left to go, hopefully before Oct. 20.

TARIFF DELAY MEANINGLESS UNLESS …

Re: LILLEY: Doug Ford pushes ahead on retaliation as Donald Trump blinks, online, March 6

I commend Doug Ford for maintaining his stand against Donald Trump’s proposed tariffs. The slight delay by Trump in implementing the tariffs is meaningless unless his administration uses the time to devise a way to help American industry without violating its trade agreements.

Trump is unusual among American presidents in trying to strengthen American industry by directly violating a trade agreement to which the U.S. is a party. It is particularly noteworthy because the agreement in question was negotiated by his team and signed by him. Delaying the violation by a few weeks does not make it acceptable.

SHOP LOCAL

Re: Made in Canada shopping; How to buy local in Ottawa during a U.S.-Canada trade war, March 9

When shopping for Canadian products, don’t forget to shop local. Looking for those Canadian products in a Walmart or on Amazon kinda defeats the purpose.
