5 people were hurt after a dump truck plowed through the side of Target store in North Bergen, NJ.

NORTH BERGEN, New Jersey (WABC) — A massive hole caused by a dump truck barreling through the side of a Target store has been covered.

Several people were injured after the truck struck a tractor-trailer before crashing into a Target in North Bergen, New Jersey on Friday.

A preliminary investigation found that the dump truck was loading rocks and dirt at the top of 71st Street before barreling down a steep hill. The driver then lost brakes or control of his vehicle, crossed into the southbound lanes of Tonnelle Avenue, and struck a tractor trailer before crashing through the side wall of the Target around 2:30 p.m.

“There was a lot of weight within the truck. You know, coupling that with the speed in which maybe he was going, he could have lost his brakes or control of the vehicle,” said David Donnarumma of North Hudson Regional Fire and Rescue.

Surveillance video obtained by Eyewitness News shows the moment the dump truck slammed into the side of the building.

Officials say the impact from the tractor-trailer slowed down the dump truck, meaning the crash could have been much worse.

They say there were a total of five injuries, with the most severe being a woman extricated from the Target bathroom, and the dump truck driver who was extricated from his vehicle. He suffered minor injuries.

The victims have been taken to the hospital, but it is unknown the extent of the rest of the injuries.

Video from NewsCopter 7 showed tow trucks pulling the dump truck from the gaping hole in the side of the building.

Inside the store, it looked like a bomb had gone off. Water spewed from broken pipes, while the wall was demolished.

Target shoppers were shocked by the destruction that came without warning.

“We were at the cat food aisle, and we heard a big bang, okay? And I asked my friend, ‘is everything all good?’ He’s like, ‘yeah, that’s normal. Probably the truck loading up,'” said witness Abed Taha.

Police say they are holding the dump truck for further investigation, and say preliminarily, it looks like an accident.

Meanwhile, the hole on the side of the building still needs to be repaired despite being covered with plywood. Extensive damage inside the store will also need to be cleaned up.

No charges have been filed at this time.
