Chanteé Lans has more on the details of the arrest and the charges against 55-year-old Jorge Ramos.

NASSAU COUNTY, Long Island (WABC) — A 55-year-old man arrested for sex trafficking across Nassau County, Long Island is an undocumented immigrant, according to authorities.

Investigators are aware of at least three women, who all allegedly fell victim to 55-year-old Jorge Ramos, an undocumented immigrant from Mexico.

“In collaboration with our federal partners, specifically ICE and the FBI, our detectives have been working on this case, and they took the lead part in making this important arrest,” said Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman.

Blakeman says Ramos was arrested Thursday from his home in Astoria, Queens, and charged with sex trafficking, promoting prostitution in the second degree and promoting prostitution in the third degree.

“After undercover work, extensive surveillance, interviews of witnesses and court ordered search warrant, we effectively arrested Mr. Ramos,” said Nassau County Police Department Chief of Detectives Christopher Ferro.

Nassau County Police say they received a tip last July, then launched an investigation into Ramos.

According to a felony complaint, he allegedly trafficked women at the Long Island Marriott Hotel, in Uniondale in November and at the Hyatt Hotel in Garden City this month.

The complaint says he secretly recorded one of the women, and threatened to show her family and police if she didn’t continue to work for him.

“These women are victims, victims of this man’s sex trafficking and we need to stand up and help the victims of these crimes,” said Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly.

Ramos, who pleaded not guilty to felony human trafficking, was held on $500,000 bond. His attorney spoke outside of court on his immigration status.

“My client has told me that he does have a work permit,” said defense attorney Peter Menodakls. “We will look into the matter and take it from there.”

Nassau County Police say his work permit expired in the early 2000’s.

“As we all know he’s innocent until proven guilty, thank you,” said Menodakls when asked about his thoughts on the allegations.

Ramos is also accused of trafficking women from his Astoria apartment and in Virginia.

If convicted on the top charge, he could face up to 25 years in prison.
