GLENDALE, Ariz. — The Chicago White Sox added another veteran to their outfield options Tuesday, signing Michael A. Taylor to a one-year, $1.95 million contract, a source confirmed to the Tribune.
The Sox finalized the deal Wednesday afternoon.
“Excited about Michael, the defensive versatility, really like the defender,” Sox manager Will Venable said Wednesday at Camelback Ranch. “We know he can hit lefties. He gives us an opportunity to match some guys up. And late in games, (he) gives us some real good defense to end games.”
Taylor, 33, has a .235/.290/.381 slash line with 136 doubles, 100 home runs and 353 RBIs in 1,082 career games during parts of 11 major-league seasons with the Washington Nationals (2014-20), Kansas City Royals (2021-22), Minnesota Twins (2023) and Pittsburgh Pirates (2024). He won a World Series with the Nationals in 2019.
He played in 113 games for the Pirates last season, hitting .193 with nine doubles, five home runs and 21 RBIs.
Taylor earned the American League Gold Glove Award for center field in 2021. He leads all major-league outfielders with 52 defensive runs saved since 2020.
The Sox also signed outfielders Austin Slater and Mike Tauchman during the offseason. Slater and the Sox came to terms on a one-year, $1.75 million deal in November. The Sox signed Tauchman to a one-year, $1.95 million contract in December.
“We talk about ending games and finishing games,” Venable said, “and to have those two (Taylor and center fielder Luis Robert Jr.) out there — talking about Austin Slater and Tauchman as well — we feel really good about our defense out there late in games.”
In Wednesday’s corresponding 40-man roster move, the Sox placed right-handed pitcher Jesse Scholtens on the 60-day injured list. Scholtens is working his way back after missing all of 2024 following Tommy John surgery last March.
