7 impending free agents Giants should not re-signon January 8, 2025 at 10:09 am

The New York Giants have 30 impending free agents — most of the unrestricted variety — on their roster, leaving general manager Joe Schoen to make some tough decisions in the coming months.

Of those 30 players, there are at least eight the Giants should absolutely re-sign. But how many of them should they avoid and allow to walk? For a team already lacking depth, that’s a tough question.

But you can’t re-sign everyone and some simply don’t fit. So with that in mind, here’s a look at seven impending free agents the Giants should wish a fond farewell.

But you can’t re-sign everyone and some simply don’t fit. So with that in mind, here’s a look at seven impending free agents the Giants should wish a fond farewell.

QB Tim Boyle

This one seems fairly obvious. The Giants are expected to bring back quarterback Tommy DeVito and then will likely sign (or trade for) a veteran before adding another in the 2025 NFL draft. From a pure numbers perspective, that leaves Tim Boyle as the odd man out.

Boyle filled a specific role here in 2024 but that will not be available in 2025.

QB Drew Lock

If Boyle makes no sense to re-sign, it can easily be argued that Drew Lock shouldn’t be re-signed, either.

That’s not a deliberate knock on the veteran who had a career game in Week 17, just the reality of where the Giants are going at the position. The team is in desperate need of consistency at quarterback and Lock doesn’t provide that — he never has.

It’s important to remember that Lock wasn’t even the Giants’ first choice anyway. That was Tyrod Taylor, who they lost because Schoen completely misread the room.

WR Gunner Olszewski

This is a tough call because Gunner Olszewski has had his moments with the Giants. He’s a former All-Pro and solid punt returner, but how many spots can the team allocate to special teams-only players? Ihmir Smith-Marsette should be an absolute re-sign which leaves Olszewski on the outside looking in, unfortunately.

DB Isaiah Simmons

This has less to do with what Isaiah Simmons is capable of and more to do with how defensive coordinator Shane Bowen used him. Simmons didn’t have that pronounced role so many anticipated at the start of the 2024 season and he was obviously bothered by the lack of playing time. He just doesn’t seem to be a fit despite his versatility and may be better served finding an opportunity elsewhere.

LB Azeez Ojulari

The Giants really should have dealt linebacker Azeez Ojulari at the trade deadline when his value was at its highest. Instead, they hung on too long and he was once again lost to injury. Schoen will likely address depth along the edge at some point this offseason but because you can’t rely on Ojulari to stay healthy, they’ll have to look elsewhere.

S Elijah Riley

Safety Elijah Riley spent the entire 2024 season on injured reserve (IR) after suffering a concussion in August. At best, the former Army Black Knight was a depth and special teams piece. The team doesn’t have an overwhelming need for more safeties on the 53-man roster, especially if Jason Pinnock is re-signed, so allow Riley to find an opportunity elsewhere.

CB Divaad Wilson

If the Giants need cornerback Divaad Wilson in 2025, they’ve done something horribly wrong. It’s a position they must address head-on this offseason and it will require the addition of quality play-makers, not role-players. There will obviously be a need for cost-effective depth but Wilson was an emergency measure this season having been signed off Arizona’s practice squad due to a slew of injuries.
