Dr. Dre Reveals Details of Health Scare: Three Strokes During Brain Aneurysm Hospitalization

Famed hip-hop artist and producer Dr. Dre, whose real name is Andre Young, opened up about his health journey in a recent interview, shedding light on a frightening experience three years ago when he was hospitalized for a brain aneurysm. Speaking on SiriusXM’s “This Life of Mine with James Corden,” Dre disclosed that his condition took a serious turn for the worse after he sought medical attention for pain behind his right ear.

“Next thing you know, I’m blacking out. I’m in and out of consciousness and I ended up in the ICU. I was there for two weeks,” Dre recounted. “I’m hearing the doctors coming in and ‘You don’t know how lucky you are.'”

During his hospital stay, Dre revealed that he suffered three strokes, adding to the severity of his situation. Additionally, he was informed by medical professionals that he had high blood pressure, a revelation that surprised him given his dedication to a healthy lifestyle.

“I’m lifting weights, I’m running, I’m doing everything I can to keep myself healthy. I said, ‘Would that have prevented it if I had worked out a little bit harder or ate different or something like that?’ It’s like, no. That’s hereditary,” Dre remarked.

Reflecting on the experience, Dre expressed gratitude for being alive, emphasizing the unpredictable nature of health crises. “When you go through that situation, it’s crazy especially when I was on my way home from the hospital because possibly, that couldn’t have happened,” he said. “I don’t know. It’s crazy, so now knowing that I had no control over that. It’s just something that could happen out of the blue.”

Dre’s health scare occurred in 2021, prompting concern among fans and the public. However, he assured everyone of his well-being in an Instagram post on Jan. 5, 2021, thanking his family, friends, and medical team for their support.

The multiple Grammy award-winning artist and producer, known for his groundbreaking work with N.W.A. and collaborations with hip-hop icons like Snoop Dogg, Eminem, and Kendrick Lamar, is set to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Tuesday, marking yet another milestone in his illustrious career.
