But the 2025 Juno Awards in Vancouver featured more outright expressions of patriotism than in any prior year. One only need look at the news to know why.

Musicians from coast to coast to coast were expressing the attitudes of a majority of Canadians in their anger and serious offence at being threatened with annexation as the 51st state. From front-and-centre displays of the Maple Leaf on clothing to more nuanced expressions of elbows up rebuttals, musicians were sounding off about keeping the True North strong and free.

Songs such as Blue Rodeo member Jim Cuddy’s We Used to Be the Best of Friends boomed over sound systems at events and that tune is only the first of many soundtracks to the ongoing sonic resistance.

What was said: Having already doubled-down on how much he loves Canada, the Junos and the diversity of this country’s music scene, all-around cuddle toy and Juno host Michael Bublé led off with a moving monologue about how Canada is not for sale before launching into one of the most entertaining Juno Awards shows in recent memory.

Earlier in the week at a rehearsal for the big event, the host had given an emotional speech about being a ‘hometown boy who never left and, why would you, when you live in the greatest country in the world.’ He said he never misses a chance to let fans know about being Canadian and Canada when he tours the world.

Side note: Given the trend toward entertainers running countries that stand up to bullies, is it time for the Burnaby crooner to consider a run for politics? He certainly can deliver a moving speech and has incredibly broad appeal.

Anne Murray’s Lifetime achievement award speech

What was said: If she hadn’t said a single word, the rhinestone team Canada #1 jersey she turned up on stage with spoke volumes. But the 26 times Juno-winning vocalist told a story of building a career in a nation with national support for emerging artists and the opportunities it gave her. Later, at a press conference backstage, Murray pointed out the Order of Canada badge on her jersey and stressed how so many Canadian artists who make it in the U.S. are pushed to relocate and how she pushed back: “Canada is my safe haven.”

What was said: Vancouver rapper bbno$ — who is pronounced baby no dollars — left little doubt about his opinions of the head of DOGE when he noted “Elon Musk is a piece of garbage.” Clarifying why he felt that way to the press post-speech, the MC said that the day he posted a video in support of gay rights was the day Musk gave his ‘Roman salute’ in Washington. Add-in the billionaire claiming Canada is not a real country even though he has birthright citizenship and bbno$ felt justified: “Nobody should do a Nazi salute.”

What was said: Nominated in the new South Asian music category, Surrey artists Indepal Moga, Jazzy and Chani Nattan were joined by Victoria’s GMINXR for a backstage chat after their awards show performance of the global smash Coolin’. Discussing their pride in their Punjabi heritage and the exploding South Asian music scene across Canada taking the world by storm, Chani Nattan proudly displayed a very ornate bit of patriotic bling in his diamond-studded Canadian flag ring. Leaving the stage, he held it up declaring “Not for sale.”
