Police have charged a man with hit-and-run in a collision that led to the death of a woman on Stoney Trail earlier this week.

Just before midnight on Tuesday, a white Toyota Corolla operated by a woman in her 50s was hit by a vehicle thought to be a semi-truck/trailer, which left the scene in the southbound lane of Stoney Trail near the Nose Hill Drive N.W. bridge.

The crew of a road maintenance truck stopped at the collision site to render medical assistance to the woman.

Seconds after that, a black 2018 RAM truck driven by a 21-year-old man smashed into a post and cable barrier, colliding with the woman and striking the maintenance vehicle.

The woman was pronounced dead upon arrival at hospital.

On Thursday, Calgary Police said a multi-unit investigation led them outside the city to make an arrest.

“Following an investigation by our Traffic Unit, with assistance from other areas within the Calgary Police Service and from the public, a semi-truck was located yesterday in Rocky View County and was identified as being the vehicle that left the scene of the collision,” police said in a press release.

As a result, Gaganpreet Singh, 25, the alleged driver of the truck, has been charged with hit-and-run and hit-and-run causing death.

His next court appearance is on Friday.
