The Independent Investigations Office has cleared Agassiz RCMP of wrongdoing in a 2022 crash that left four people injured.

The civilian oversight agency investigated the circumstances surrounding the collision, which occurred Sept. 17, 2022 after Mounties tried to stop a Toyota Matrix they believed was being driven by people involved with several recent crimes in the Fraser Valley.

The Matrix did not stop, then crashed into a Honda CRV in the 3800-block Lougheed Highway.

Two people in the CRV and two in the Matrix were injured and taken to hospital.

The IIO was notified of the incident to determine whether police actions contributed to the injuries of the occupants in the vehicles.

After reviewing the evidence, which included statements from two of the four people hurt, witnesses, cellphone video footage and police records, the IIO chief civilian director found there were no reasonable grounds to believe that any officer might have committed an offence.

“The officers’ attempt to stop the vehicle was lawful and they are not responsible for the driving behaviour that resulted in the collision,” said the agency on Thursday.
