Penrith are looking to snap a three-game losing streak before South Sydney take on old rivals the Roosters on Friday night. Follow the action live.
The Rabbitohs force a dropout and Chad Townsend produces possibly the worst drop-kick seen in the NRL – it’s hooked around so much it’s eventually sailed backwards, to the far left of the field.
Souths get another full set on the Roosters’ try-line, and then there’s a set restart, so the Tricolours are getting plenty of goal-line defence practice here. But again they’re up to the task, Jye Gray’s last tackle grubber crashes into the legs of Roosters forward Siua Wong and is picked up by Dom Young – who runs away unchallenged to score!
The Rabbitohs players had all but stopped – was Young offside? – but the referee awards the try. Turns out that yes, Young was in front of Wong so play is called back. Can Souths crack the Roosters’ defence this time?
Rabbitohs 6, Roosters 6 after 24 minutes
They could not lift with the return of Nathan Cleary. They could not lift for Isaah Yeo’s 250th game. They were never going to lift with the small Friday evening crowd on hand at their makeshift new home at CommBank Stadium.
The Panthers have suddenly dropped four straight games following their 22-18 loss to the North Queensland Cowboys.
They have not dropped four of their opening five games since the 2013 season when they missed the NRL finals.
Yeo was all class in his milestone game, and Cleary did his best to produce something special in the second half, but never has it been more obvious the support acts were no longer there.
Latrell Mitchell is back, and he looks as strong as ever after carrying three defenders over for his first try of the season. Or has he? There is some question over the grounding and now the bunker is taking a look. It appears James Tedesco may have bumped the ball free, and the try has been overruled.
Rabbitohs 6, Roosters 6 after 15 minutes
The Rabbitohs have levelled things up with an equally simple try. Lachlan Hubner takes a hit-up at close range then pops a pass to Tevita Tatola who trots over between the posts.
Meanwhile the news is it’s a left hamstring injury for Rabbitohs halfback Jamie Humphreys, one of the success stories of the first month of the season.
Rabbitohs 6, Roosters 6 after 12 minutes
The Roosters strike gold in their first foray into Rabbitohs territory, with Billy Smith making a good charge down the left and then five-eighth Sandon Smith going himself from 20 metres out, splitting the defence and crossing for the game’s first try. He dives over behind the posts and converts himself from right in front.
Roosters 6, Rabbitohs 0 after nine minutes
Souths are on the attack here, and twice the Roosters have come close to grabbing an intercept but knocked the ball on instead. But the defence holds firm, and Cody Walker’s last tackle bomb finds the turf but bounces into Roosters hands.
And now there’s bad news for Souths with halfback Jamie Humphreys leaving the field injured. Jayden Sullivan replaces him.
Rabbitohs 0, Roosters 0 after six minutes
And we’re on for Souths against the Roosters, with Jamie Humphreys kicking off proceedings for the Bunnies. And the Roosters make the first error of the game with Angus Crichton dropping it cold with his first touch of the game. The Rabbitohs, with Latrell Mitchell back on board, get the first attacking opportunity of the match.
Rabbitohs 0, Roosters 0 after one minute
