Two city organizations are teaming up at a weekend event aimed at helping Calgary high-school students feel stylish and self-assured on their graduation day.

In previous years, Youth Central and the Trellis Society ran separate events with the same goal — to ensure every Grade 12 student could obtain the graduation attire of their dreams, regardless of their financial situation.

This year, the two events — previously known as the Cinderella Project and Grad Town — are merging in a collaborative effort called the GRADitude Project.

Participants had to register for one of two weekends where they’re paired with a volunteer who helps co-ordinate their outfit, said Lisa Litz, Youth Central’s engagement director.

“It’s like going into a bridal store and having a consultant who gets the dresses for you and matches you. It’s this ’boutique’ experience to really help them find their dream outfit.”

More than 200 Calgary students expected to receive grad outfits

Last year, Youth Central provided more than 100 students from 34 schools with graduation outfits — right down to shoes, accessories, makeup and other personal-care items. By collaborating with the Trellis Society, this year they’re expecting to double the number of students.

With the cost of living on the rise, more families than ever are seeking out the help the project offers.

“We have seen demand increase,” Litz said. “Everyone’s pocketbooks are tight right now.”

The effect goes beyond just saving money. Having great attire allows kids to celebrate their accomplishment with pride and confidence.

“Grad is a very important experience for a lot of people,” said Tami Fabiyi, 17, who attended a previous GRADitude event in March. “It’s hard to be part of that when you can’t necessarily afford it.”

Before hearing about the GRADitude Project, Fabiyi had considered not going to her grad celebration.

“I was not feeling entirely comfortable with the idea of not having a dress, or just going there in casual attire,” she said. But finding her dream dress has allowed her to look forward to her graduation.

“I get to walk the stage in a dress that I’m comfortable in and proud to be in,” she said.

Seeing the effect that finding the right grad attire can have on kids and their families, Litz said, is really impactful.
