FRISCO, Texas — The Frisco Police Department and FBI are investigating fake social media posts posing as Chief David Shilson in the wake of the fatal stabbing of Austin Metcalf.
Frisco PD announced Thursday that a bogus account was posing as Chief Shilson and spreading information that is “false or misleading.” FPD encouraged the public to only rely on its verified department profiles across social media platforms.
The account made a post as Shilson that released unconfirmed information about the deadly stabbing at a Frisco track meet, which the department describes as “false.”
The FBI confirmed to WFAA that it and FPD are investigating the fake profile.
The department readdressed the issue Friday, directly citing a “false” image of a picture claiming to be a report from the Collin County Medical Examiner’s Office. Again, Frisco PD emphasized that they had not released any information and declared the image was fake.
FPD also warned users against sharing the account’s posts and “spreading unconfirmed information.”
Friday evening, Chief Shilson released an official statement on the matter, saying the account’s actions were “a criminal offense and a 3rd degree felony which will be investigated.”
The investigation comes just days after the fatal stabbing of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf at a Frisco track meet. 17-year-old Karmelo Anthony faces a murder charge for the stabbing.
