DESOTO, Texas — DeSoto Mayor Rachel Proctor drew four challengers, and there were two other contested city council races in the southern Dallas County city on Saturday.
Unofficial results showed Proctor, Place 3 council candidate Everett Jackson and Place 5 Debrah North with leads, but with Jackson and North below the 50% threshold needed to avoid a runoff.
Proctor was first elected mayor of the city, located about 15 miles south of Dallas, with a population of nearly 56,000 as of 2023, according to U.S. Census estimates, in 2021.
She was re-elected for her first official term in May 2022. Prior to that, she was first elected to the DeSoto City Council in a special election in March of 2013. She serves as the owner and administrative director of the Neighborhood Christian Learning Center of Dallas, Inc.
This year, she faced stiff competition from four challengers: business leader Gerry Ravnell, who’s also served on the city’s planning and zoning commission, former educator Dinah Marks, who serves as the city council member for place 5, Author Anderson and CaTonya Flowers.
Additionally, six candidates sought to replace Nicole Raphiel in the place 3 city council seat. Raphiel was first elected to the DeSoto City Council in 2018.
Another five candidates ran to replace Marks in the place 5 city council seat.
