A video showing former Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce lying on the side of a road in Canberra late at night after Parliament has surfaced, sparking controversy and speculation about the incident.
The footage, obtained exclusively by Daily Mail Australia, captured Joyce on Lonsdale Street in the Canberra suburb of Braddon at 11:26 PM, where he was seen mumbling obscenities into his phone.
According to witnesses, Joyce had fallen off a pot plant while engaged in an animated phone conversation with his wife, Vikki Campion. However, the witness clarified that Joyce appeared relaxed and did not seem to require assistance.
In response, Campion criticized the witness for not offering help, stating that she was half asleep when Joyce called her and accusing them of negligence. However, there was no evidence suggesting Joyce needed assistance at the time.
Joyce, in a statement to Daily Mail Australia, described the incident as “very embarrassing,” explaining that he fell over while walking back to his accommodation after Parliament adjourned. He clarified that he continued his phone call animatedly, referring to himself for having fallen over, before eventually walking home.
The incident comes amidst scrutiny on parliamentary standards and workplace culture, with calls for integrity, dignity, and mutual respect in Commonwealth Parliamentary Workplaces. The code emphasizes that alcohol is not an excuse for breaching these standards.
This is not the first time Joyce’s behavior has attracted public attention, with previous incidents of bizarre antics and questionable remarks during Question Time. Despite the controversies, Joyce remains a prominent figure in Australian politics, continuing to address various issues and participate in parliamentary proceedings.
