Legislation requires a separate agency to investigate police involved shootings. RCMP immediately notified the province’s director of law enforcement and ASIRT was dispatched.
“The RCMP believes in accountability and transparency and in so doing will provide full support to the ASIRT investigators. Events like this are difficult for everyone involved.”
ASIRT will review evidence including interviews, video, audio, photographs of the scene, the pursuit and anything related to the incident. The RCMP have begun their own internal review as well.
“…to gather a full account of what took place during this incident. RCMP training, policy, police response, and the officer’s duty status will be subject to review.
Two days after the event, RCMP publicly requested further information from the public. Knowing that the suspect vehicle was driving at high speeds within city limits and struck an undetermined number of vehicles, there was a possibility that the pursuit was recorded.
They’re are asking anyone who noticed damage to their vehicle, between 1:45 p.m. and 2 p.m., to contact them. Anyone who may have videos or photos that show a white GMC Sierra driving at high speeds and possible striking vehicles in that same time frame, is asked to contact police at 780-830-5701.
