A Deputy Commissioner’s office was attacked, and a police official was injured as fresh violence erupted in Manipur’s Kangpokpi town on Friday.

A group of people was seen marching towards the Deputy Commissioner’s office and attacking the administrative headquarters in the Kangpokpi town, police said.

A fresh bout of violence was seen in the Kuki and tribal-dominated hilly district of Kangpokpi as the situation remained extremely tense.

Just three days ago, a major confrontation occurred in the Saibol area of Kangpokpi district as women from the Kuki community protested the deployment of security forces in the region where a recent gunfight had taken place.

Large groups of women from nearby villages gathered to obstruct operations by joint security forces, including personnel from the Border Security Force (BSF), Indian Army and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).

The protest came after a security operation on December 29, during which the Army, CRPF, and BSF cleared the area of armed militants and dismantled bunkers.

The fresh violence erupted days after Chief Minister N Biren Singh apologised to the people of the state for the ethnic violence that has been occurring since May 2023, and appealed to all sections to “forgive and forget” the past.

Addressing a press conference in Imphal, Singh, who has come under fire from the opposition over his handling of the violence, emphasised that peace was being restored in Manipur.

Manipur has been rocked by sporadic violence since May 3, 2023, between the majority Meiteis and the Kukis over quotas and economic benefits. The ongoing violence has killed over 200 people and displaced thousands.
