Salt Lake Valley residents heading into the mountains for a hike out of the heat won’t be able to use three popular trails for the rest of the summer.
The three trails to Lake Solitude and Twin Lakes Reservoir in Big Cottonwood Canyon will be closed through Oct. 30, according to an order from the U.S. Forest Service. Construction crews from Solitude Mountain Resort are using heavy equipment in the area to install snow-making pipes underground, the order states.

A portion of the Silver Lake Nature Trail, located next to Brighton Resort’s parking lot, will also be closed periodically due to excavation work on the Solbright Trail but will be open Thursday and Friday.
The Silver Lake Nature Trail will then be open on weekends and on weekdays after 3 p.m., according to Adam Shaw, the Salt Lake District ranger for the Forest Service.
“I understand that Pioneer Day is a really important time for Utah families to get out and enjoy the outdoors,” Shaw added, “but we do encourage visitors to plan ahead.”
