A fire broke out at Salt Lake County Metro Jail Thursday morning, prompting officials to evacuate inmates before fire crews extinguished the blaze.
Inmates at the Salt Lake County Metro Jail were moved to “new housing locations” after a fire broke out there Thursday morning, according to the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office.
In a news release, the sheriff’s office said “prisoners were safely evacuated.” Crews of firefighters from departments throughout the Salt Lake Valley quickly extinguished the fire, the release said, and stopped it from spreading to other parts of the facility.
South Salt Lake Fire Chief Terry Addison said the fire was on the roof of the building and did not get inside, though he said firefighters did need to remove some insulation to stop the fire’s spread.
The fire began near where repair crews were working on a heating and ventilation unit, Addison said, though he did not specify whether that is what started the fire.
Salt Lake County Sheriff Rosie Rivera said about 200 inmates needed to be moved, and law enforcement officers were unable to book anyone in the jail for about two hours.
As of Tuesday afternoon, Rivera did not have an estimate for repair costs, though she said the damage should not affect any inmates or prevent the facility from receiving new inmates.
The South Salt Lake Fire Department is investigating the cause of the fire, according to the release.
