Senior Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader and Lok Sabha MP Abhishek Banerjee on Thursday slammed the Opposition in West Bengal over the RG Kar hospital rape-murder incident and said that opposition leaders are not “raising any issues” now.

The sharp words of Abhishek Banerjee came at the launch of the ‘Sebashray’ healthcare initiative in his Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha constituency, taking free healthcare services to the doorstep of people in the area.

Speaking at the launch, Banerjee said, “The opposition said that Mamata Banerjee had plotted the RG Kar incident. And see today, they are not raising any issues. The opposition has said many things; they said that in the RG Kar Hospital case, Mamata Banerjee had a conspiracy. Just go and ask them. The opposition is blaming West Bengal as a hub. But what hub? West Bengal is a hub for development. West Bengal shows paths to everyone.”

Widespread protests were triggered last year across the country after the body of the trainee doctor was found inside the seminar hall of Kolkata’s RG Kar Hospital on August 9, 2024. The CBI has filed a charge sheet against prime accused Sanjay Roy, who was a civic volunteer attached to the Kolkata Police.

Citing examples of the Lakshmi Bhandar scheme, Abhishek Banerjee further added, “Maharashtra is copying Lakshmi Bhandar. West Bengal is the hub of education, health, love, togetherness, communal harmony, and culture.”

Hitting out at the CBI in the RG Kar Hospital rape and murder case, Abhishek said, “The accused was arrested by Kolkata Police before.”

The ‘Sevashray’ free health camps will offer a range of services, including free drug distribution, examination, referral services, helpdesk, and app-based registration with real-time updates. These camps will operate from 9 am to 5 pm every day till January 11.

The health camps will be organised in 71-gram panchayats and 93 wards within the Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha constituency in South 24 Parganas district.

The launch of ‘Sevashray’ comes after four months of the RG Kar hospital rape and murder incident.

The senior TMC leader also promised that good treatment would reach the homes of people in his Lok Sabha constituency. He also emphasised that patients requiring better treatment will be referred to 12 hospitals in the state, including RG Kar Hospital, SSKM, and Diamond Harbour Medical College.
