Despite facing significant challenges due to his illness, Mitchell approached life with grace and commitment, living each moment to the fullest.
ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, affects the nerve cells responsible for muscle movement in both the upper and lower body, leading to their deterioration and eventual death, as outlined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In the United States alone, over 30,000 individuals are believed to be living with ALS, with an average of 5,000 new diagnoses each year. Most individuals diagnosed with ALS survive between two to five years after the onset of symptoms.

Mitchell publicly disclosed his ALS diagnosis in a 2020 interview with PEOPLE, describing the moment as surreal and shocking. Despite the challenges, Mitchell continued to pursue his passion for acting, notably portraying various characters in the “Star Trek” universe, including Klingons Kol, Kol-Sha, and Tenavik, as well as Aurellio, in “Star Trek: Discovery.” He also lent his voice to multiple characters in an episode of “Star Trek: Lower Decks.”
Beyond “Star Trek,” Mitchell made notable appearances in TV series such as “Jericho” and “The Astronaut Wives Club,” along with roles in films like “Miracle” and “Captain Marvel.”
In the Instagram post announcing his passing, Mitchell was remembered as a daydreamer, nature enthusiast, cat lover, and above all, a proud father. He is survived by his parents, his wife, and their two children. Mitchell requested that any donations be directed towards ALS research or towards supporting his children’s future endeavors.
