An alleged robber was involved in several crashes on Highway 1 in Burnaby that led to major traffic delays early Tuesday afternoon.

The B.C. RCMP highway patrol said the successive crashes happened around 1 p.m. in the eastbound lanes of the Trans-Canada Highway.

The suspect’s vehicle was either directly or indirectly involved in hit-and-run collisions near Gagliardi Way, Government Street and Brunette Avenue before it finally stopped.

The suspect abandoned the vehicle there and tried to flee on foot across the highway.

A suspect was taken into custody by Burnaby RCMP and the police dog service soon after, said Sgt. Patrick Davies of the highway patrol.

Officers responded to the crashes at all three locations and several highway lanes were closed, leading to a lengthy traffic backlog. It began clearing up after all lanes reopened by 3:30 p.m.

One lane on Brunette Avenue was also closed but was expected to reopen soon.

Reported injuries in the crashes were minor, said Davies.
