OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Oklahoma City Thunder coach Mark Daigneault knows exactly why the NBA Finals are coming down to a Game 7. “It’s a contest of wills,” he said. And to this point, neither side has lost its will. Back and forth they have gone, the Thunder and the Indiana Pacers. Indiana led the series, then Oklahoma City tied it, then Indiana retook the lead, then Oklahoma City tied it again, then it was the Thunder who moved one win away and then the Pacers knotted the matchup for a third time. THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) — Hundreds of people protested Sunday against NATO and military spending and against a possible conflict with Iran, two days before a summit of the alliance in The Hague that is seeking to increase allies’ defense budgets. “Let’s invest in peace and sustainable energy,” Belgian politician Jos d’Haese told the crowd at a park not far from the summit venue. Although billed as a demonstration against NATO and the war in Gaza, protesters were joined by Iranians who held up banners saying “No Iran War,” the day after the United States launched attacks against three of…
OTTAWA — Prime Minister Mark Carney called for de-escalation on Sunday after the United States carried out strikes against three Iranian nuclear sites earlier in the day. Carney issued a social media post shortly before 8 a.m. Eastern saying the U.S. military action was “designed to alleviate” threats posed by Iran, but the situation in the Middle East remains “highly volatile.” “Stability in the region is a priority,” Carney said on the social media platform X. “Canada calls on parties to return immediately to the negotiating table and reach a diplomatic solution to end this crisis.” The military intervention brings…

Iranian Canadians and Jewish groups turned worried eyes to the Middle East on Sunday, as U.S. strikes against three Iranian nuclear sites raised fears of escalating violence. Nimâ Machouf, a member of a Montreal Iranian women’s association, said family members in Iran are living “from one bomb to another.” “I’m very worried because this will only accelerate the violence in the region,” she said in a phone interview. “It will further aggravate the problem and take us further away from peace.” Machouf, who is also an epidemiologist and former NDP candidate, believes the strikes will only hurt the people who…
MADRID (AP) — Spain reached a deal with NATO to be excluded from a 5% of GDP defense spending target, days before the military alliance’s leaders will gather at a summit, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said on Sunday. “Spain will, therefore, not spend 5% of its GDP on defense, but its participation, weight and legitimacy in NATO remain intact,” Sánchez said in a televised address. Sánchez said that Spain would be able to keep its commitments to the 32-nation military alliance by spending 2.1% of GDP on defense needs. In letters exchanged on Sunday between NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte and…

When 32-year-old Rahma Esslouani landed at Toronto Pearson Airport in July 2024, she unlocked an overwhelming sense of safety and freedom that she hadn’t felt in more than a decade. Since her early 20s, Esslouani says she has faced relentless violence and persecution due to her gender and sexual identity, but with the help of a local charity, she was able to seek asylum in Canada and escape the abuse. “It was very hard for me to survive in Morocco,” Esslouani said in an interview with CityNews. “I always felt more attracted to women, and I don’t like to wear…
One woman is dead following a fire in the east end of Hamilton on Sunday. Fire officials say they were called to a home on Mons Avenue around noon. When they arrived, crews were met with heavy flames and smoke pouring out of the second storey of the home. “We were made aware that there was one person unaccounted for inside the structure at the time,” said Hamilton Fire Chief David Cunliffe. “We were also made aware that one of the neighbours had tried unsuccessfully a couple of times to get inside the house to try and assist the resident…
The hot and humid temperatures have forced the City of Toronto to intermittently close several pools on Sunday, which were supposed to be open to provide relief from the heat for residents. CityNews witnessed long lines at several city pools, with several people reaching out to say they were being turned away from accessing pools due to the high temperatures. “Despite being promoted as a cooling refuge from the heat by the city, Alex Duff Memorial Pool is operating at limited capacity, with only one pool open,” said Naomi. “The reduced access has left residents waiting in long outdoor lines…
Toronto-area school boards say they have no plans to close schools on Monday due to the current heat and humidity gripping the city. The Toronto District School Board says while some schools are fully air conditioned, others have no air conditioning, and those students should brace for “uncomfortable conditions.” The TDSB says of its 579 schools, about 30 per cent have central air. The rest either have access to cooling centres like libraries and gyms or smaller air conditioning units. “Please encourage children to wear light clothing, hats, and sunscreen and drink lots of water throughout the school day to…

President Donald Trump said the U.S. attacked three sites in Iran related to the country’s nuclear program. Rep. Jim Himes, the ranking Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, said it was too early to know the success of a series of U.S. attacks against Iran – calling the strikes a “massive gamble” on the part of President Donald Trump and citing past U.S. military action in the region. “I mean, we’ve seen this movie before. Every conflict in the Middle East has its…
