TORONTO — Canada’s main stock index dived, then pared back some of its losses to finish the day 2.2 per cent lower on Tuesday as investors worried about a widening of the war between Iran and the United States and Israel. “The big fear with this conflict, the social ramifications aside, is what’s the impact going to be on energy and oil prices and how is that going to potentially translate into inflation?” said Michael Greenberg, head of Americas portfolio management at Franklin Templeton Investment Solutions. TORONTO — A woman’s encounter with Frank Stronach decades ago was consensual, the businessman’s lawyer suggested Tuesday as she questioned the seventh and final complainant in his Toronto sexual assault case. Leora Shemesh’s suggestion during cross-examination appeared to stun the complainant, who initially only responded by saying “oh my God” three times with increasing emphasis. When the defence lawyer repeated her suggestion, the complainant replied: “Absolutely not.” “I’m going to say to you: you weren’t there that night,” the woman continued. “If you think that was a consensual act — having your pantyhose ripped, being held down and penetrated —…

OTTAWA — Statistics Canada says the flow of foreign direct investment into the economy came close to a two-decade high last year, while economists caution the volume of capital entering Canada isn’t the only metric that matters. Agency data released last week shows foreign direct investment, or FDI, hit $96.8 billion last year, up about $10 billion from 2024 and the highest level recorded since 2007. Prime Minister Mark Carney hailed the investment surge as “good news for Canadians” in a social media post last week. “More international investment means more of our businesses can scale up faster, creating more…

York Regional Police (YRP) have charged three Toronto residents in an alleged long‑running fraud scheme that investigators say siphoned more than $360,000 from a Markham business through falsified invoices and shell companies. The investigation began after the victimized business uncovered suspicious billing following the termination of a senior manager. According to police, between Jan. 9 and Sept. 12, 2025, the manager allegedly submitted fraudulent invoices for services that were never provided. Those payments were then routed to companies connected to two additional suspects. Police say the discovery triggered a broader criminal investigation, ultimately leading to multiple arrests and the release…
