Durham Regional Police say the arrest of a teen accused of dealing drugs ultimately led them to a massive $7 million cocaine seizure. “Investigators took a 17-year-old male into custody for possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking, and subsequently executed a search warrant at a facility in Toronto,” police said in a release. The search took place on Monday, February 23, 2026, during which investigators with the Drug Enforcement Unit (DEU) say they recovered 325 kilograms of cocaine valued at over $7 million. OTTAWA — Gov. Gen. Mary Simon says Indigenous communities across the country — and particularly in the Arctic — play a vital role in Canada’s national security. Speaking at the National Indigenous Defence Conference today in Ottawa, Simon said Canada can’t afford to overlook the strategic advantages Indigenous communities provide through their knowledge of terrain and traditional practices. Simon says the Canadian Rangers in the North have shared vital information with the Canadian Armed Forces during surveillance patrols and search and rescue missions, along with advice on how to survive in extremely cold weather. She says national security and unity…
China’s government announced Friday it would suspend some tariffs on Canadian agricultural goods and seafood following a recent visit by Prime Minister Mark Carney. The country’s finance ministry said in a statement that 100 per cent tariffs on canola meal and peas, and a 25 per cent levy on lobsters and crabs, won’t be imposed. The statement, which made no mention of canola seed tariffs, said the changes would take effect March 1 and continue through to the end of 2026. Carney met earlier this year with Chinese President Xi Jinping, and the leaders inked a deal on electric vehicles…

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump said Friday that the U.S. is in talks with Havana and raised the possibility of a “friendly takeover of Cuba” without offering any details on what he meant. Speaking to reporters outside the White House as he left for a trip to Texas, Trump said Secretary of State Marco Rubio was in discussions with Cuban leaders “at a very high level.” “The Cuban government is talking with us,” the president said. “They have no money. They have no anything right now. But they’re talking to us, and maybe we’ll have a friendly takeover of…

OTTAWA — A former national security and intelligence adviser to the federal government says it “strains credibility” to suggest India has stopped harmful meddling in Canadian affairs. Vincent Rigby, who now teaches at McGill University, said Canada needs to strike a balance between poking India in the eye and pretending national security threats no longer exist as the countries try to rebuild their relationship. “I get that we need to have a relationship with India. You have to work even with the countries that you find problematic,” Rigby said. “But you’ve got to be very, very careful not just to…

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Pentagon will forbid members of the military from attending Columbia, Yale, Brown and other universities starting next school year amid a campaign to cut ties with institutions that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth called “factories of anti-American resentment.” Hegseth announced the policy in a video posted to social media on Friday, three weeks after he said the military was cutting ties with Harvard University. Without citing evidence, Hegseth said the universities have become “breeding grounds of toxic indoctrination” that undermine military values. “For decades, the Ivy League and similar institutions have gorged themselves on a trust fund…
The Toronto Blue Jays have made Dunedin, Fla., into a virtual oasis during turbulent economic times in Florida. Canadians’ broad grassroots boycott of the United States has had a massive impact on the tourism industry, especially in states like Florida. Dunedin, which is the home of the Blue Jays’ spring training facility and its single-A minor league team, seems to be have spared thanks to the loyalty of Canadian baseball fans. “We’re in this kind of special bubble. It’s a special place. It really is a special place,” said Mayor Maureen Freaney. “We have so many spokes on the wheel…
BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — In the moments after Border Patrol agents dropped him off at a Buffalo doughnut shop, surveillance video recorded Nurul Amin Shah Alam stepping gingerly through the empty parking lot in his county-issued jail booties. He pulls up his hood against the cold as he walks past a drive-thru window, then paces away into the night. Five nights later, the nearly blind refugee from Myanmar was found dead in the street, raising questions about whether federal agents could have done more to ensure his safety when they released him from custody, miles from his home, without informing…

Subway service has resumed following a more than three-hour suspension on a stretch of Line 2, which made for a chaotic rush hour commute home. Just after 3:30 p.m., the TTC advised commuters that trains were not running between St. George and Keele stations due to an injury at track level and that shuttle buses were being employed along the affected route. However, there was no further update from transit officials for almost three hours until a social media post around 6 p.m., when they simply reiterated that “shuttle buses are running,” while providing alternative travel plans. “GO Transit is…
