A major downtown intersection that was slated for closure until sometime in mid-April has reopened weeks ahead of schedule. The intersection of College and Bay streets, which was closed to vehicles and cyclists on March 2 for sewer and streetcar track replacement, reopened Friday. Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow said the expedited completion was the result of adding more workers to compress the timeline. Chow also said the intersection of Queen Street East and Broadview Avenue also reopened Friday night, three weeks ahead of schedule. Canada’s national lawyers group has rebuked a call from four premiers for Ottawa to overhaul how it appoints provincial superior court and appeal judges. The premiers of Alberta, Saskatchewan, Ontario and Quebec wrote this week in a letter to Prime Minister Mark Carney that they want to see only judges appointed who are first approved and recommended by the provinces. The premiers say doing so would boost public confidence in the courts and “help ensure the judiciary reflects the communities it serves.” Their call was quickly brushed aside by federal Justice Minister Sean Fraser. OTTAWA — Public servants who are eligible for the federal government’s early retirement incentive can now apply for it after waiting months for the program’s launch. The program — part of the government’s efforts to cut the number of public servants — is meant to allow some federal workers to retire early without a pension penalty. It was announced in the fall. The last budget said the government intended to introduce the one-year program as soon as Jan. 15, 2026, but couldn’t launch it until after the budget implementation bill was passed. The legislation, known as C-15, became law on…

OTTAWA — Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre is supporting a ruling this week by the International Olympic Committee that bans transgender women from women’s sports at the Games. The policy change comes ahead of the next Olympics in Los Angeles in 2028 and aligns with an executive order from U.S. President Donald Trump. The new policy will require athletes to undergo mandatory genetic testing to establish their gender. The test involves a screen of saliva, cheek swabs or blood samples to test for the SRY gene, which is a piece of DNA “typically found on the Y chromosome that initiates male…

What do conservation authorities, a downtown Toronto parking lot and freedom-of-information requests have in common? On the face of it, nothing – but provincial legislative changes are coming to all three, and they are jammed into an omnibus budget bill tabled Thursday by Ontario Finance Minister Peter Bethlenfalvy. The province’s plan for doling out taxpayer money in the coming year also comes with proposed changes to the ticket resale market and retail shopping on holidays. Proposing such a wide range of changes is an approach that skirts transparency and accountability, opposition party leaders said Friday. Interim Liberal Leader John Fraser…

Ontario’s housing start projections have been revised downward once again in the province’s budget, putting the government even farther off track from building 1.5 million homes over 10 years — a target to which the ministers in charge say they pay no mind. The province is projecting just 64,800 housing starts this year — 10,000 fewer than it expected for this year in last year’s budget and 30,000 fewer than the 2024 plan projected. The government’s own math early on in its bid to get 1.5 million homes built by 2031 showed that housing starts should be at 175,000 per…
