TORONTO — Canadian Tire Corp. says a new platform it’s been developing with Microsoft will help the retailer’s staff better detect patterns in customer demand. The platform will be used at Canadian Tire as well as the Mark’s and SportChek banners. The retailers will use it to help identify trends, such as spring-thaw floods, back-to-school move-ins and new weekend fitness routines. They will then use those insights to better co-ordinate inventory, product assortments, promotions, digital content and services. When Canadian Tire piloted the tool recently, it identified more than 1,000 instances when the company could serve customers better and will…

York Regional Police have charged a Vaughan man in connection with a sexual assault investigation and are appealing for additional victims to come forward. Investigators say the alleged incident began on Feb. 9, when a woman contacted a realtor through a social media sales platform about a rental listing. Police allege that while inside the home, the suspect sexually assaulted the woman and committed…

The province will not commit to an opening date for the new subway line currently under construction in Toronto and warns a major expressway could be shut down to build bridges, Metrolinx CEO Michael Lindsay said Wednesday. He said the plan is to open the Ontario Line by the early 2030s, potentially later than the 2031 target. “Based on where civil infrastructure is at this point, we think we’re still trending towards the early 2030s to be done with civil infrastructure,” Lindsay said. Then the testing phase would begin, he said. The Ontario Line was initially supposed to open in…

Team Canada has lost its captain. Sidney Crosby left Wednesday’s quarterfinal against Czechia midway through the second period and will not return, Hockey Canada announced. Crosby was crunched along the boards in the neutral zone by Czech defenceman Radko Gudas at centre ice and took another awkward hit along the boards later in the same shift before skating gingerly off the ice. After chatting with a team doctor on the bench, Crosby made his way down the tunnel toward the dressing room with an apparent limp. Crosby, the 2010 Olympic hero, had enjoyed a strong round-robin in Milan with two goals and…

A messy winter storm hitting southern Ontario, including the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA), is bringing a mix of ice pellets and heavy snow to some areas and freezing rain elsewhere in the region on Wednesday. Toronto and the GTA are under a yellow freezing drizzle advisory. Sidewalks and roads are expected to stay slippery overnight as temperatures drop to -2C. In addition, patchy freezing drizzle is expected tonight in the wake of the storm, which could lead to a fresh glaze of ice on top of snowy surfaces. On and off drizzle and freezing drizzle are expected to…

MILAN — This hockey team so many call the best they’ve ever seen, they never stopped believing.  But they will concede they flew a little close to the sun. “You look down the bench, and you see the players we have on our team, and you know no one’s going to quit, and we have a great chance of coming back,” says Drew Doughty, calmed by two Stanley Cups and two Olympic gold medals, and now a heart-in-throat 4-3 overtime thriller over Czechia as he goes for three. “But as the time keeps ticking, you’re like: Holy f—… this isn’t ideal. But…

TORONTO — The head of RioCan Real Estate Investment Trust says the recent financial troubles of retailers like Toys “R” Us and Hudson’s Bay are not representative of the wider retail landscape. Chief executive Jonathan Gitlin said RioCan had only one location leased to Toys “R” Us, and that it had terminated it before the toy retailer filed for creditor protection at the start of February. “On an overall basis, there’s no impact on RioCan, and I don’t think that Toys “R” Us serves as a leading indicator on the health of retail in general,” said Gitlin in an interview.…

OTTAWA — Immigration Minister Lena Diab is adding three new permanent residency streams to Canada’s express entry program that cover a variety of professions, including military ones. The new streams are also open to researchers and senior managers with Canadian work experience and are part of what Diab calls a federal strategy to attract “top talent” to the country. The new streams are meant to compliment the government’s $1.7 billion strategy to attract researchers to Canadian institutions. In a speech to the Canadian Club Toronto on Wednesday, Diab said the government’s broader immigration strategy is to attract “the best and…

Canada has won bronze in the women’s 3,000 metre short track speed skating relay event in Milano Cortina. Danae Blais, Florence Brunelle, Kim Boutin and Courtney Sarault led the relay for much of the race before falling back to third. Canada finished in four minutes 4.314 seconds, three-tenths of a second behind gold medallist South Korea. Host Italy was second. The Canadians avoided going down after a collision with the Netherlands midway through the race. A slight slip by Blais later in the race basically dropped Canada out of gold-medal contention. For Sarault, it is her fourth medal in short…

WASHINGTON — Democrats are demanding correspondence between a billionaire bridge owner and U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick as part of their investigation into President Donald Trump’s threat to stall the opening of the Gordie Howe Internaitonal Bridge. “President Trump’s wealthy donors should not be holding secret meetings with administration officials to influence economic and foreign policies that have real impacts on the American people,” Rep. Robert Garcia, the top Democrat on the House oversight committee, said in a Wednesday news release. House Democrats first launched the probe last week after Trump made a post on social media insisting the United…

Had Canada not come away with the 4-3 overtime win, Olympic officiating could have faced some serious questions after a controversial goal by Czechia. On Czechia’s third goal of the men’s Olympic quarterfinal game on Wednesday, which gave the side a 3-2 lead, it appeared as though the Czechs had six men on the ice, leading to a slight mix-up from the Canadians on the rush. Midway through the third period, Ondrej Palat wired a wrister past Jordan Binnington on the odd-man rush. However, it looked like Czechia had six men in the defensive zone when the initial turnover was…
