A Catholic priest employed at an Oakville church has been charged with sexual assault. Halton police say they opened an investigation into an allegation of sexual assault in early February. It was allegedly committed against a woman while she was volunteering at an Oakville church. Reverend Ranjan D’Sa, 53, of Oakville has been charged with one count of sexual assault as a result of the investigation. D’Sa has been a member of the clergy since 2010 and has worked at St. Dominic’s Roman Catholic Church since 2016. Investigators are concerned there may be more alleged victims and ask anyone with…

VICTORIA — The MP representing Tumbler Ridge, B.C., has described how a 12-year-old girl heroically tried to save two classmates shot in the mass killing in the community last month. Bob Zimmer told Tuesday’s National Prayer Breakfast in Ottawa that the girl, named Christina, had dragged Abel Mwansa Jr. and Maya Gebala under a table after both of the 12-year-olds were shot at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School. MONTREAL — A Quebec Superior Court has ruled that it was inappropriate for the federal government to try to block publication of a court ruling in a case that has been shrouded in secrecy. Federal Justice Department lawyers had argued that the ruling should remain secret to protect a police informant’s identity. But Quebec Superior Court Judge Lukasz Granosik said that they had ”committed an abuse of process.” The former informant is suing police officers, but all of the names of parties are redacted in a version of the ruling that was released on Wednesday. OTTAWA — A House of Commons committee is calling on the government to make it harder for protest groups to sign up dozens of candidates in a single riding, after Elections Canada announced Wednesday that voters in an upcoming byelection in Quebec will use a write-in ballot because of the high number of candidates. The Longest Ballot Committee has targeted ridings in a number of byelections dating back to 2022 and has said it is signing up candidates in the Montreal-area riding of Terrebonne. A two-vehicle crash in Vaughan on Wednesday afternoon has sent one person to hospital with serious injuries, York Regional Police say. Emergency crews were called to Apple Mill Road and Jane Street at around 12:33 p.m. for reports of a crash involving an SUV and transit bus. A 15-year-old boy suffered life-threatening injuries after being struck by a vehicle in northwest Toronto. Toronto police say it happened at around 2:35 p.m. in York at the intersection of Humber Boulevard and Louvain Street.
