OTTAWA — A multi-party group of parliamentarians is urging Ottawa to step up its efforts to stop Canadian companies from profiting from slavery in their operations abroad and through imports. Parliament passed the Supply Chains Act in 2023, which requires Canadian companies and government institutions to report annually on what they did to prevent or mitigate against the use of child labour or forced labour. Advocates argue the bill is not being adequately enforced. The rapper Offset was ambushed by a “large group” of people who tried to rob him outside a Florida casino last week when he was shot in the leg, the FBI said Tuesday. Federal investigators said that they are still searching for the suspects who assaulted Offset last Monday night outside of Seminole Hard Rock in Hollywood, just north of Miami. A 3.9 magnitude earthquake rumbled the nation’s capital on Tuesday afternoon, according to Earthquakes Canada. According to reports, the quake hit near Shawville, Que. about 77 kilometres northwest of Ottawa. It happened about 12:36 p.m. on April 14, the site notes. It was at a depth of 13 kilometres. Ontario high school students will soon have their attendance count for a sizable portion of their final grades, one of a set of upcoming changes to how students are assessed. York Regional Police investigators are trying to identify four suspects after a violent home invasion in East Gwillimbury early Monday morning. Officers were called to a home in the Frederick Pearson Street and John Candy Drive area at around 1:00 a.m. on April 13, after three male suspects forced their way inside and began assaulting two occupants while a fourth suspect waited in a getaway vehicle. HAMILTON — A Hamilton restaurant has been temporarily shuttered as public health officials investigate an outbreak of salmonella that has sent several people to hospital. Hamilton Public Health says nine confirmed cases of salmonella infection have so far been linked to the Piper Arms Stoney Creek location on Stone Church Road East. Among them, seven have been hospitalized. Officials say the confirmed cases saw symptoms including diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain and chills appear between March 30 and April 5. Two men have been arrested and six more have been identified as suspects in an alleged Entertainment District fight last year. Officers were called to reports of an assault in the King Street West and Peter Street area on Nov. 17, 2025. A man has died and a woman has been critically injured after an SUV collided with a transport truck in Brampton Tuesday afternoon. Peel police were called to Williams Parkway and Airport Road around 3:15 p.m. for reports of a crash. The driver of the SUV, an adult male, was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
