NEW YORK (AP) — A firefighter whose truck collided with an Air Canada Express jet last month on a runway at New York’s LaGuardia Airport, killing both pilots, heard an air traffic controller warn “stop, stop, stop” but didn’t know who it was for, federal investigators said Thursday. Just seconds earlier, the controller had cleared the fire truck to cross the runway, but the truck started moving while warning lights that act as a stop sign for crossing traffic were still lit, the National Transportation Safety Board said in a preliminary report on the March 22 crash. Because the truck…

The City of Toronto has passed a motion opposing the Ford government’s takeover of Billy Bishop Airport. The motion comes after the Province introduced the Building Billy Bishop Airport Act, 2026 in the legislature on Thursday, which looks to expand the airport, including plans to extend the runway to allow jets to operate from the island facility. If passed, the province would take over the City of Toronto’s role in the tripartite agreement between the City, Toronto Port Authority and the federal government that governs the airport. It would also take ownership of city-owned lands at the airport, including one-third…

Also Thursday, Microsoft said it was offering voluntary buyouts to thousands of its U.S. employees. The software giant plans to make the offers in early May to about…
Ontario’s opposition parties called on Premier Doug Ford to apologize for a personal insult he hurled — and repeated — at a Liberal member of provincial parliament Thursday during a debate about a law that restricts public access to his records. Most of the day’s question period was focused on amendments in the budget bill that will shield records of the premier, cabinet ministers and their staff from freedom-of-information laws. Liberal critic Stephanie Smyth, who worked for decades as a broadcast journalist before entering politics, asked Ford why a premier who claims to be highly accountable is making it hard…

A 911 call was the focus on Thursday at the trial for a MiWay bus driver involved in a fatal crash three years ago in Mississauga. Both sides presented their final theories at the judge-only trial, with the Crown saying the bus driver was distracted and panicked and failed to apply the brakes until after the crash, while the defence says there’s too much reasonable doubt to support that claim. Previous dashcam footage shows MiWay bus No. 1308 violently crashing into the back of Sharron Williams’ car as she sat stopped at the red light at the intersection of Derry…
