OTTAWA — Public Safety Canada says gun owners reported more than 67,000 banned firearms to the federal government as a first step toward receiving compensation in a buyback program. The tally is about half the number of firearms the federal government expected to be eligible when the program opened in mid-January. Officials had earmarked almost $250 million in compensation to cover about 136,000 firearms. Since May 2020, Ottawa has outlawed about 2,500 types of firearms, including the AR-15 and Ruger Mini-14, on the basis they belong only on the battlefield. Prohibited firearms and devices must be disposed of or deactivated…

Are the increasingly common LED headlights on newer vehicles making our roads more dangerous? If you’ve been blinded by the light and you’re revved up about it, Transport Canada wants your input. The federal government department launched a public survey on the topic earlier this month that will remain open until April 20, 2026. “While new headlight technology in vehicles can help drivers see better, they can also cause problems for other road users,” the survey’s introduction reads. The survey takes about 15 minutes to complete and Transport Canada says feedback will remain anonymous, adding that data will be aggregated…

OTTAWA — Two First Nations chiefs are calling on Prime Minister Mark Carney to apologize for saying he could “outlast” a First Nations woman who was protesting over mercury poisoning in her community. Chrissy Isaacs, a Grassy Narrows woman suffering from mercury poisoning, was in Toronto on Monday to demand compensation from the provincial government for mercury contamination in her community. The Dryden Paper Mill released thousands of kilograms of mercury into the community’s river system from the 1960s to 1970s, and community members are still dealing with the fallout today. OTTAWA — The federal government’s new “30 days or free” policy for issuing passports takes effect today. If it takes more than 30 business days to process an application, applicants will get a full refund of their passport or travel document fee. The government says applicants should be compensated if the government doesn’t meet its service standards. It says most passports are processed within the service standard of between 10 and 20 business days. The new 30-day guarantee doesn’t include mailing time and the countdown starts when the government receives a complete application. The standard won’t apply to all services,…

Ontario’s health minister shut down one avenue of publicly funding all nurse practitioners Wednesday, as the province missed a federal deadline for ensuring their medically necessary services are covered. The federal government gave provinces and territories until April 1 to ensure they are funding nurse practitioner services equivalent to what doctors provide, though penalties for noncompliance won’t kick in until April 2027. Ontario does not yet have a plan in place, despite Health Minister Sylvia Jones pushing the federal government years ago to close what she called a “loophole” in the Canada Health Act that allowed nurse practitioners to set…

Be honest, did you fall for an April Fools prank online — even for a second — before looking at the calendar this morning? With truth often being stranger than fiction in the current world climate and disinformation rampant across the internet, we don’t blame you. Even the most seasoned among us in the newsroom did a double take after seeing some fairly compelling social media posts that were published today. One of the most convincing came from Toronto’s own transit commission at the start of the work day. In a now deleted post on X, the TTC announced a…
