OTTAWA — Some local and independent TV stations are asking the federal broadcast regulator to start a process to force Meta to pay for allowing some news content on Facebook and Instagram. They say that despite Meta’s move in 2023 to pull news from its platforms in response to the Online News Act, some content remains available. The Online News Act requires Meta and Google to compensate media outlets for displaying their content. While Meta pulled news from its platforms in response and has not been required to pay news outlets, Google has been making payments under the act. In…
BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — The body of James “Jimmy” Gracey, a college student from Illinois who went missing while in Spain on spring break, was found Thursday in the water off a Barcelona beach, police said. Gracey’s body was found by police divers and positively identified, the press office for Catalonia’s regional police in Barcelona told The Associated Press. The University of Alabama student’s body was found near where he was last seen outside a nightclub with his friends early Tuesday. He was visiting friends in Barcelona for spring break. Catalan police say that their investigation continues into the cause…
The peak construction season could see a few pauses this summer, at least in the downtown core and on select major roads as Toronto prepares to host six games for the FIFA World Cup. The City of Toronto has developed a plan that will restrict lane closures for hydro work and construction. It’s a move that industry stakeholders say could delay occupancy at several high-rise developments and even cost some workers weeks or months of paycheques. “It could be upwards of 10,000 units. We’ve got hundreds of projects at the residential side,” Richard Lyall, President of the Residential Construction Council of Ontario says of the impact. “There’s commercial work, office work that’s being done. There’s…
OTTAWA — A report from the Competition Bureau says shared kitchens and food hubs could help reduce barriers to entry for small businesses in the food sector. The agency says small- and medium-sized businesses face challenges, such as the high startup costs of a commercial-grade kitchen, processing equipment, and dealing with complex food safety regulations. It says shared infrastructure, such as shared kitchens and food hubs — which usually come equipped with tools and are licensed by local health authorities for businesses like meal-kit providers, caterers and pop-up restaurants — could help lower costs for starting a new business while…
NEW YORK (AP) — Live Nation Entertainment’s longtime chief executive was the star witness at a New York antitrust trial Thursday, defending the dominant position his company has taken over the last two decades as a lawyer for nearly three dozen states tried to portray the concert giant as greedy and abusive to customers. Michael Rapino, who has led the company since it was formed 21 years ago, testified at the trial resulting from the lawsuit the U.S. Justice Department brought two years ago against Live Nation and its ticketing subsidiary, Ticketmaster. “I’m very proud,” Rapino said, speaking of the…
OTTAWA — Prime Minister Mark Carney has endorsed a statement issued by allies expressing a willingness to contribute to efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz more than two weeks into the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran. Carney endorsed the joint statement Thursday shortly after it was published by the U.K., France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Japan. “We express our readiness to contribute to appropriate efforts to ensure safe passage through the Strait. We welcome the commitment of nations who are engaging in preparatory planning,” reads the joint statement. The statement does not say how the nations propose to help.…
As war continues to rage in the Middle East, gas prices here in Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area are set to soar seven cents overnight to 173.9 cent(s)/litre — levels not seen since April, 2024. That price projection comes from Roger McKnight, chief petroleum analyst with En-Pro, who adds that the conflict in Iran is throwing the global energy market into unprecedented territory. “The changes at the pump are not following any of the rules used by the oil companies in the past,” McKnight told CityNews on Thursday. “Normally pump prices follow the changes at the wholesale level with…
New findings from Statistics Canada have shed light on the effect of screen time on children if they follow the Canadian Paediatric Society screen time guidelines. The guidelines recommend children aged five to 17 years old be limited to two hours a day. In 2019 and 2023, the Canadian Health Survey on Children and Youth followed the same cohort of Canadian children and youth to assess changes in their health and well-being. The children and youth were aged 3 to 11 in 2019 and aged 7 to 15 in 2023. Of those children, 44 per cent followed the screen time…
HAVANA (AP) — Cuba is preparing to receive its first shipment of Russian oil this year, just days after the government announced it was operating on natural gas, solar power and thermoelectric plants as severe power outages continue to hit an island whose power grid is crumbling. The Russian-flagged Anatoly Kolodkin is some 3,000 nautical miles from Cuba in the Atlantic Ocean and is expected to reach the island in 10 days, Jorge Piñón, an expert at the University of Texas Energy Institute, told The Associated Press. If so, that would mark the first time any oil shipment from any…
LOS ANGELES (AP) — ABC has scrubbed the upcoming season of “The Bachelorette,” starring Taylor Frankie Paul, three days before its planned premiere, citing a newly released video from 2023 in which she appears to punch, kick and throw chairs at her former partner as her young daughter watched and cried. Thursday’s cancellation of the already filmed 22nd season of the reality show is unprecedented. While ABC parent company Disney cited the older video, the move comes amid a current domestic violence investigation involving Paul and Dakota Mortensen, father to a son who is the youngest of her three children.…

The New York Islanders announced Thursday they plan to relocate their AHL affiliate from Bridgeport, Conn., to Hamilton’s TD Coliseum for the 2026-27 season. Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews underwent successful knee surgery on Thursday to repair a torn MCL. The team said Matthews would be re-evaluated in approximately 12 weeks, and they expect him to be fully recovered in time for next season. Matthews was injured in a knee-on-knee collision with Anaheim Ducks captain Radko Gudas last Thursday and ruled out for the season the next day. The hit from Gudas, who was suspended five games for the play, came after Matthews corralled a pass in front of the Ducks’ net. As Matthews turned to line up a shot, Gudas came across…
