A 53-year-old man is dead following a multi-vehicle crash near Port Perry. Ontario Provincial Police say two vehicles collided on Highway 7/12 near the 4th Line just before 6 a.m. Sunday. “Initial stages of the investigation indicate that both vehicles were travelling in opposite directions when a head-on collision occurred,” police said in a release. The driver of one of the vehicles, a 53-year-old man from Sunderland, was pronounced dead at the scene. HAMILTON — Police in Hamilton are warning of extremely unsafe ice conditions after two youths fell into the city’s harbour and four more jumped in to save them. Police say they were called Saturday after two people fell through the ice near the Pier 7 Boardwalk at the western edge of Lake Ontario. When officers arrived, a bystander told them there were six people in the water, but all were safely pulled to shore by police. Natalie Wilkie won Canada’s first gold medal at the Milan Cortina Paralympics on Sunday with a first-place finish in the women’s standing para-biathlon competition.  Wilkie, from Salmon Arm, B.C., finished in 33 minutes 1.8 seconds, over a half-minute ahead of China’s Zhao Zhiqing (33:33.5). Ukraine’s Oleksandra Kononova took bronze in 33:37.9. It is the fourth career Paralympic gold medal for the Canadian flag-bearer and her ninth Paralympic medal overall. TORONTO — Jewish community leaders in Toronto are calling for more support after two Toronto-area synagogues were struck with gunfire this weekend. Sara Lefton of the United Jewish Appeal Federation of Greater Toronto said the shootings represent “a threat to all,” not just Jewish Canadians. GANDER — The sprawling international lounge inside the Gander airport in central Newfoundland has been officially recognized as a heritage structure. Environment Canada is warning residents in much of Alberta and southern Saskatchewan to secure loose objects and expect damage as strong winds whip through, while leaving thousands of residents in the dark.  The warnings are in place for most areas from the Alberta-U. Ontario’s police watchdog is investigating after police shot a 23-year-old man multiple times during a traffic stop in Burlington. According to the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), officers were conducting a traffic stop in the parking lot of Crestwood Motel at approximately 12:30 a.m. on Sunday. Authorities said the male driver was shot numerous times by police after he allegedly drove towards the officers. OWEN SOUND — Police said nearly two-dozen people who were fishing needed to be rescued when they became stranded on an ice shelf that broke from shore in Georgian Bay in southwestern Ontario on Sunday. The price for a barrel of Brent crude, the international standard, was at $107.97 after trading resumed on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, up 16.5% from its Friday closing price of $92.69.
