A fatal collision between an Air Canada jet and a fire truck at LaGuardia Airport late Sunday is drawing attention to the strict protocols that pilots, groundcrew and air traffic controllers follow to land planes safely. On the final approach, pilots are in close communication with the air traffic control tower, which clears them for landing. The tower is also responsible for giving the thumbs-up to any groundcrew looking to cross the runway, including first responders. Experts say it’s not uncommon for the same air traffic controller to handle both incoming aircraft and groundcrew movement, as appeared to be the…

An investigation into violent, armed carjackings across Peel Region and the Greater Toronto Area dubbed Project Stratis has resulted in six arrests and the seizure of approximately $800,000 in stolen luxury vehicles, Peel Regional Police said in a release on Monday. Investigators said they received reports about numerous armed carjackings between January 18 and February 1, with the suspects targeting high-end vehicles, particularly various Mercedes-Benz models. The release states that “officers determined the accused were not only carrying out the robberies but also arranging for the stolen vehicles to be re-vinned and resold or shipped overseas to Ghana.” With help…
OTTAWA — Canada can protect rules-based international trade and resist pressure from superpowers by working more with the Americas, shoring up supply chains and strengthening economic ties, Costa Rica’s trade minister said on a recent visit to Ottawa. “We share the same vision of the type of world that we would like to live in,” Manuel Tovar Rivera said in an interview with The Canadian Press. “Canada has enormous opportunities in our hemisphere.” Costa Rica is on track to become the first Central American state to join the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership, or CPTPP, a trading bloc…
OTTAWA — Prime Minister Mark Carney’s office said public servants have corrected information the government tabled in Parliament that suggested he did not “proactively” raise human rights or foreign interference during his visit to Beijing. “The parliamentary return in question was submitted in error,” wrote Carney’s spokeswoman Audrey Champoux. Carney met in January with Chinese President Xi Jinping. He told reporters at the end of his visit to Beijing that he had spoken with Xi about human rights in direct conversations. The Privy Council Office, which serves the prime minister, said in a parliamentary tabling on March 13 that Carney…
NEW YORK (AP) — A flight attendant still strapped in her seat survived being thrown from an Air Canada plane that collided with a fire truck at New York’s LaGuardia Airport, her daughter said Monday. It’s a “total miracle,” Sarah Lepine told Canadian news station TVA Nouvelles. She said her mother, Solange Tremblay, had multiple fractures to one leg and will need surgery but otherwise was OK. An aviation safety expert said she likely was helped by being in a seat with a four-point restraint used by crew members. Related: ‘Stop, stop, stop’: Truck told to halt by air traffic…
An off-duty Windsor cop has been charged in connection with a peculiar firearm incident. Emergency crews were called to a residence in the LaSalle area shortly after 9 a.m. on Monday for a report of property damage. Detectives say the homeowners had discovered holes in the walls of their semi-detached house. “Through investigation, officers determined that a single round from a service-issued firearm was discharged inside the neighbouring home of an off-duty Windsor Police officer,” authorities wrote in a press release issued Monday afternoon. “The projectile passed through a shared interior wall and a second wall within the complainant’s residence,”…
LOS ANGELES (AP) — The 2028 Los Angeles Olympics has announced its official look, and it’s a blast of bold colors. The graphic patterns and color palettes will be used to identify everything from credentials to staff uniforms to signage to competition venues and the athletes village. The concept announced Monday is based on a California superbloom, a phenomenon that occurs every 10-15 years in the spring and results in a vibrant explosion of wildflowers across hills, valleys and deserts. The LA28 design team studied past Olympic and Paralympic Games, including the 1984 Los Angeles Games, to inspire the look.…

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A civil jury in California found Monday that Bill Cosby was liable for drugging and sexually assaulting a woman in 1972 and awarded her $19.25 million. After a nearly two-week trial in Santa Monica, jurors found the 88-year-old Cosby liable for the sexual battery and assault of Donna Motsinger. Cosby’s attorney, Jennifer Bonjean, said in an email that they are disappointed and fully intend to appeal the verdict. The decision came nearly five years after Cosby was freed from prison in Pennsylvania when the state Supreme Court threw out a criminal conviction based on similar allegations.…
NEW YORK (AP) — Kalshi and Polymarket, the two biggest prediction market platforms, rushed to institute new industry guardrails on Monday after two key senators announced legislation that could severely curtail the industry’s prospects. Kalshi said it would ban political candidates from trading on their own campaigns, and it would preemptively block anyone involved in college or professional sports from trading contracts related to the sports they play or are employed by. Polymarket instituted a broader ban than Kalshi. The company rewrote its rules to say clearly that users cannot trade on contracts where they might possess confidential information or…
OTTAWA — Gun owners have reported more than 51,000 firearms to the federal government with one week left to go in a program to provide compensation for banned guns, Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree said Monday. The figure is well short of the 136,000 firearms for which the government set aside money when the buyback program for individual owners opened in January. Anandasangaree said he is “cautiously optimistic” leading up to the March 31 deadline for the program, which offers owners compensation for turning in or permanently deactivating their guns. Since May 2020, Ottawa has outlawed about 2,500 types of…
Gas prices are expected to tank by 10 to 11 cents on Wednesday, according to an early outlook from price specialists at En-Pro. “Things can change at the last minute, but so far that’s what it looks like,” Roger McKnight, En-Pro’s chief petroleum analyst told CityNews. Prices at the pump are expected to fall to $1.69 per litre in the Greater Toronto Area following weeks of steady increases after the United States and Israel’s joint attack on Iran. McKnight says the prospect of gas hitting $2.00 per litre is “a distinct probability, not a mere possibility.” “There is nothing to…
