In one Russian city, officials blocked a rally due to a “tree inspection.” Elsewhere, they blamed snow removal problems or still-existing COVID-19 restrictions. And in one location, administrators argued that the reason for the protest didn’t exist. Authorities in nearly a dozen Russian regions in recent weeks cited various excuses to prevent demonstrations against internet censorship and the blocking of the popular messaging app Telegram. In most cases, they succeeded. Mindful of a crackdown on dissent since the 4-year-old invasion of Ukraine, activists decided not to risk holding unauthorized rallies, even if they weren’t about the war. Some went to…

CAIRO (AP) — Iran targeted a joint U.K.-U.S. base in the Indian Ocean, and Iran’s main nuclear enrichment site was struck again, as the war in the Middle East entered its fourth week. Iran’s attack on the Diego Garcia air base — about 2,500 miles (4,000 kilometers) away — suggested Tehran has missiles that can go farther than it had previously acknowledged, or that it had used its space program for an improvised launch. Iran’s capital saw heavy airstrikes overnight and into the morning, residents said, as thousands of worshippers converged on Tehran’s grand mosque to mark the end of the holy month of…
OTTAWA — Federal departments and agencies are looking to cut more than 12,000 full-time equivalent jobs over the next three years as part of the Carney government’s spending review. That figure comes from plans released by federal departments and agencies for 2026-27 outlining how they’ll shed billions of dollars to meet the government’s cost-cutting targets. Multiple part-time positions can make up one full-time equivalent position. Rola Salem, spokesperson for the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat, said departments were asked to include in their reports details about the savings for each fiscal year until 2028-29. That included a description of how…

Sitting on almost two and a half acres of land on one of Toronto’s busiest and most popular streets, community members fear Old Orchard Public School on Ossington Avenue has caught the eye of developers. Last December, the City of Toronto adopted a new policy allowing the development of 14-storey buildings on designated large streets to provide more housing options for Torontonians. The policy initially included school lands, but after pushback from concerned residents, the city exempted them. Now, CityNews has learned that the Toronto District School Board is actively fighting that decision. “It seems very purposeful to me that…
A 60-year-old man is facing a murder charge in connection with Toronto’s fourth homicide of the year. Police discovered a woman’s body at a home in the Threadneedle Crescent and Cresthaven Drive area just after 1:30 p.m. on March 11. The circumstances surrounding her death were determined to be suspicious, and the homicide squad began an investigation. Police later identified the woman as 60-year-old Xian Wei Shao of Toronto. In a release on Saturday, police said 60-year-old Sheng Long Wang had been arrested and charged with second-degree murder. Investigators would not say what the relationship, if any, was between the…

Roger McKnight, chief petroleum analyst with En-Pro, says the price at the pumps is expected to climb five cents to 175.9 cent(s)/litre at most Toronto and GTA gas stations on Sunday. Including Sunday’s projected increase, the price of gasoline has risen 40 cents since the start of the month. “The changes at the pump are not following…
