Universal access to publicly-funded healthcare is a source of national pride and a social policy that Canadians are willing to go to great lengths to defend. But are we equally prepared to stand up for our public education system? A Mississauga councillor is pushing to remove Duke of York Boulevard from the city’s map, citing sexual abuse allegations tied to its namesake, former Prince Andrew. The street runs along city hall, and was named after Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor following his 1987 visit during which he opened the city’s civic centre. Mississauga city council will consider a motion on Wednesday to change the name of the street. Prince Andrew was stripped of his royal titles earlier this month by King Charles III. If council signs off, staff would begin consultations immediately with Indigenous groups, community organizations, and residents on a new…

A controversial bill that gives the Ontario government more control over school boards passed a final vote at Queen’s Park on Wednesday. Bill 33, The Supporting Children and Students Act, gives Education Minister Paul Calandra the power to override school board decisions, remove trustees, and establish policies and guidelines. It also brings back school resource officer programs (SRO) in locations where the service is offered. ‘There’s something nasty taking place’: Opponents voice concerns over fast-tracked bill The Ford government fast-tracked the bill, meaning it skipped public debates and hearings. That prompted backlash from educators, teachers, unions and parents, who voiced…
NDP and Opposition Leader Marit Stiles was kicked out of the Ontario legislature during Question Period on Wednesday after calling the Ford government “corrupt.” Stiles made the comment as the opposition continued to grill Labour Minister David Piccini over the scandal-plagued Skills Development Fund. “Speaker, first he is hiding behind unions, dragging their names through the mud, now he’s hiding behind workers in the civil service. The one thing this minister will not do is take responsibility for the mess he has created,” she said. Piccini has come under sustained fire from opposition parties calling for his resignation since an…

What can you do when an Airbnb guest, who checked in months ago, refuses to pay and also refuses to check out? That’s what one Richmond Hill couple, who asked to remain anonymous, is trying to figure out. OTTAWA — Senators have passed sweeping amendments to a bill that would simplify the transfer of First Nations status between generations, rejecting the federal government’s advice to limit its scope. Bill S-2, introduced in the Senate with support by the Liberal government, was drafted to eliminate some gender inequities in the Indian Act and allow some 6,000 people to become eligible for First Nations status. Some senators and Indigenous community leaders said the bill didn’t go far enough. On Tuesday, senators changed the legislation to eliminate what is known as the “second-generation cutoff,” opting instead for a one-parent rule that…
The hockey team that came closest to knocking out the champs and was within one win of a ticket to the final four is now staring blankly at a trip to the lottery. The first-quarter descent of the Toronto Maple Leafs — who awake after 20 games to see only the sad-sack Buffalo Sabres below them in conference standings — has been as precipitous as it is befuddling. They’ve been ripped publicly by their starting goalie and riddled with injuries. They’ve laid eggs when everyone expects a pushback and lost confidence despite dressing one of the most experienced cores in the game.…

David Maltinsky had worked at the FBI for 16 years and was nearly finished with special agent training in Quantico, Virginia, when he was called into a meeting last month with FBI officials, given a letter from Director Kash Patel and told he was being “summarily dismissed” over the inappropriate display of political signage, Maltinsky’s lawsuit said. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — NASA unveiled close-up pictures on Wednesday of the interstellar comet that’s making a quick one-and-done tour of the solar system. Discovered over the summer, the comet known as 3I/Atlas is only the third confirmed object to visit our corner of the cosmos from another star. It zipped harmlessly past Mars last month. Several NASA spacecraft at and near the red planet zoomed in on the comet as it passed just 18 million miles (29 million kilometers) away. The European Space Agency’s two satellites around Mars also made observations. Astronomers are aiming their ground telescopes at…
CALGARY — A former energy executive says federal climate policy will have to be finessed in just the right way if Alberta’s push for a “grand bargain” on a new West Coast oilsands pipeline is to pan out. Dennis McConaghy, who retired from the company now known as TC Energy Corp. more than a decade ago, made the comments after The Globe and Mail reported the Alberta and federal governments were nearing an agreement in support of such a project. Federal insiders told the newspaper that an easing of a B.C. north coast tanker ban, strengthened industrial carbon pricing and…
