STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — Penn State women’s volleyball coach Katie Schumacher-Cawley has agreed to a contract extension through the 2030 season two months after leading the Nittany Lions to the national championship and days after completing cancer treatments, the school announced Friday. A report of a car theft in Oak Park sparked a police chase through the south suburbs early Friday morning, police said. Oak Park police said at about 1 a.m., a woman reported her vehicle was taken by her daughter’s ex-boyfriend, a 25-year-old man identified as Thomas Kozie. A young boy was killed and three others injured, including two Chicago firefighters in a fast-moving blaze that heavily damaged an apartment building in the city’s West Ridge neighborhood on the city’s Northwest Side, officials said. According to Chicago Fire Department officials, fire crews were called to the blaze in the multi-story brick apartment building in the 2700 block of West Granville Avenue just after 11 a.m. Arriving crews quickly raised the still-and-box alarm to a 2-11 alarm, which summons additional manpower and firefighter equipment to the scene. Skokie residents who live near Church Street and McCormick Boulevard got a rude awakening Friday morning after a broken water main flooded the areas of the neighborhood and the cold turned much of it to ice. Skokie and Evanston officials issued a boil order for drinking water and closed down streets while some schools switched to e-learning. Skokie officials said the flooding was caused by a burst water main at East Prairie Road and Emerson Street. Department of Health and Human Services officials expect most of the agency’s roughly 5,200 probationary employees to be fired Friday under the Trump administration’s move to get rid of nearly all probationary employees, according to an audio recording of a National Institutes of Health department meeting. In that meeting, an NIH office director told employees that some probationary staff with specialized skills might be spared. WASHINGTON — The Treasury Department’s Office of Inspector General on Friday said it was launching an audit of the security controls for the federal government’s payment system, after Democratic senators raised red flags about the access provided to Trump aide Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency team.
