Buttermilk wants to sell specially-branded bourbon at its Naperville restaurant but needs city approval for a variance and a code amendment before it can proceed, city staff say. Owner Katie Kouvelis took the first step last week when she broached the concept at a meeting of the Naperville Liquor Commission. “I love bourbon, I love cocktails, and I’d just like to incorporate cocktails in the restaurant,” Kouvelis said in an interview this week. Once Buttermilk can officially sell the specialty spirit, she’d like to start offering a “featured cocktail” with the liquor. Kouvelis has been thinking about adding specially-branded liquor…
In the first major union drive to reach the office in decades, a group of assistant Cook County state’s attorneys have asked the office to voluntarily recognize a bargaining unit that would represent hundreds of lawyers working for the country’s second-largest prosecutor’s office. A majority of Cook County assistant state’s attorneys in the proposed bargaining unit have signed union authorization cards with Teamsters Local 700, according to a letter sent Monday to State’s Attorney Eileen O’Neill Burke. Teamsters representatives declined to say what percentage of attorneys signed cards. The prosecutors are motivated by a desire to improve wages and working…
The DuPage County courthouse will no longer bear the name of the late U.S. Rep. Henry Hyde. The DuPage County Board voted 10-5 at its Tuesday meeting to remove the Republican congressman’s name from the building and related offices in Wheaton. While Democrats and Republicans voted along party lines on the issue, Democrats Lynn LaPlante, of Glen Ellyn, and Lucy Chang Evans, of Naperville, abstained from the vote and expressed disappointment that the matter was raised. The courthouse will now be known as the DuPage County Judicial Office Facility. “Here in DuPage County, public buildings serve all people, regardless of…
It’s time to revalue the devalued running back position in the NFL after Saquon Barkley’s mere presence, if not his production, helped the Philadelphia Eagles dismantle the Kansas City Chiefs in one of the most lopsided Super Bowls ever. Barkley capped a great year for free-agent running backs by hoisting the Lombardi Trophy after the Eagles’ 40-22 rout of the Chiefs on Sunday that avenged a heartbreaking Super Bowl loss two years earlier and denied Patrick Mahomes and Co. an unprecedented third consecutive title. Barkley, who had seven touchdown runs of 60 yards or more in his first season with the Eagles,…
Deerfield-based Walgreen Co. must pay a $987 million arbitration award to a company it contracted with to help order COVID-19 tests for patients, a federal judge ruled Monday. At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, ordering a COVID-19 test required a physician’s involvement, so Walgreens contracted with virtual care company PWNHealth so that PWN’s network of physicians could order tests for customers who scheduled appointments using Walgreens’ website, according to a court document. But when regulatory requirements changed, Walgreens began having its own pharmacists order tests using the website created by Walgreens and PWN without notifying PWN, according to the…
NEW ORLEANS — Kellen Moore, who oversaw the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles offense this season, has agreed to return to the site of his latest triumph as the next coach of the New Orleans Saints. The 36-year-old Moore will join an organization that has floundered since the retirement of quarterback Drew Brees and departure of Super Bowl-winning coach Sean Payton. The Saints haven’t made the playoffs since the 2020 season — the last of Brees’ career. Their interest in Moore became increasingly evident as they waited longer to fill their vacancy than any other NFL team seeking a new…
Sam Kerr, one of the world’s top female soccer players, was found not guilty Tuesday of racially aggravated harassment of a police officer. Kerr, a striker for Australia and for English club Chelsea, accepted she called Police Constable Stephen Lovell “stupid and white” during a heated exchange at a police station after a night out in London in January 2023, but had denied that it amounted to the charge. The verdict came after more than four hours of deliberations by a 12-person jury and on the seventh day of the trial at Kingston Crown Court in London. “Following today’s not…
Despite the game being a blowout, Sunday night’s Super Bowl averaged a record 127.7 million U.S. viewers across television and streaming platforms for Philadelphia’s 40-22 victory over Kansas City. The game was televised by Fox, Fox Deportes and Telemundo and streamed on Tubi as well as the NFL’s digital platforms. Not only is it a 3% increase from last year, it is the second straight year the Super Bowl has reached a record audience. The Chiefs’ 25-22 overtime victory over San Francisco in 2024 averaged 123.7 million on CBS, Nickelodeon, Univision and streaming platforms. According to Nielsen, the audience peaked at…
Highland Park’s ongoing dispute over a 90-year-old ordinance prohibiting City Council members from holding liquor licenses came to an end Monday evening, but bitter comments from council members and residents related to the controversy left a rift in the community. Last year, Councilman Jeff Hoobler resigned from his seat after a Prohibition-era city ordinance was rediscovered barring local officials from holding liquor licenses. Hoobler, owner of Steep Ravine Brewing Company, formerly Ravinia Brewing, chose to step down rather than give up the license. It was the spark for a lengthy and heated controversy that spilled into public events and consumed…
WASHINGTON — The Department of Education took another step Tuesday in advancing the Trump administration’s new transgender policy for sports by asking the NCAA and a key high-school sports organization to restore titles, awards and records it says have been “misappropriated by biological males competing in female categories.” The department’s office of general counsel sent a letter requesting the changes to the National Federation of State High School Associations and the NCAA. In a news release, the department said the request was “entirely consistent with the NCAA’s new policy.” The day after President Donald Trump signed an executive order last…

Not only are eggs expensive because of the ongoing bird flu outbreak. Now they are getting hard to find. And even when stores do have eggs, consumers are starting to face limits on how many they can buy. Eggs have even become such a hot commodity that there have even been a couple of heists where thieves seem to be treating the yolks as if they were made out of gold. The problem isn’t going away because the virus continues to mutate and infect more birds, other animals and some people. And anytime a chicken or turkey gets sick, the…
