In a family-friendly suburb northwest of Chicago, local officials were worried about a proliferation of shops selling hemp products that can get users high. One smoke shop in Rolling Meadows moved in next to a Dunkin’ Donuts. Two more are down the street from a middle school. Because hemp products are largely unregulated, the shops faced no restrictions on the age of their customers or the amount they can buy. A man has been arrested in connection with a fatal shooting and stabbing incident that left one person dead and two others injured during a dispute at a Hialeah home on Wednesday, authorities confirmed Friday. At Thursday’s Kane County Board Committee of the Whole meeting, Kane County Sheriff Ron Hain said the state’s new bail reform is to blame for recent public safety data that shows an increase in the county’s jail population and arrest warrant entries. According to the sheriff’s presentation on Thursday, the average annual population at the Kane County Jail fell to 221 in 2024 (after the bail reform had taken effect), but has shot up to over 300 per day in 2025.
