Today in history: On Feb. 2, 2013, former Navy SEAL and “American Sniper” author Chris Kyle was fatally shot along with a friend, Chad Littlefield, at a gun range west of Glen Rose, Texas; Eddie Ray Routh was later convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison without parole. After nearly nine months of bargaining, the Chicago Teachers Union and Chicago Public Schools have yet to settle a new, four-year contract. The two groups concluded fact-finding last week. In their most recent effort to settle, they presented extensive briefs to a third-party law arbitrator. The briefs, filed by both parties, outline their perspectives on issues they have yet to settle. The fact-finder, Martin Malin, is expected to release recommendations regarding the contract in February. However, until then, teams from both sides continue meeting five days a week to bargain. Bargaining has come to a standstill, the union said, since…
The TikTok video went viral early Monday: A brief recording appeared to show a half-dozen federal agents, one with the acronym for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement emblazoned on his back, walking past a street of brick bungalows in a western suburb of Chicago. The group included one young woman wearing civilian clothing and a white puffer coat, a sharp contrast to the men in black surrounding her. “ICE in Berwyn bright and early. Right during school drop offs,” said a caption to the clip, which had been circulated more than 10,000 times. “Some had the ice logo covered. This…
Over the past decade, the job description for the mayor of Chicago has included a new duty: responding to Donald Trump. The question before Brandon Johnson is, how does the freshman mayor come out on top against a reality TV-bred GOP president made famous for breaking the rules? Mayor Rahm Emanuel took a typically combative approach, kicking off his relationship with the White House by mocking Trump’s fixation with the crowd size at his 2017 inauguration. Emanuel’s successor, Lori Lightfoot, went with political theater when she sought to upstage Trump’s new Chicago director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in…
With allegations of corruption at the highest levels of state government, the racketeering trial of former Democratic House Speaker Michael J. Madigan and his longtime confidant, ex-lobbyist Michael McClain, is certainly serious business. But as with any lengthy trial, particularly one chock-full of big personalities and scores of undercover wiretaps, there were plenty of funny and off-the-wall moments during the 16 weeks of proceedings. Here are some of the highlights: The strangely apropos Madigan & Getzendanner hold music Given the outsized lore of Madigan as a Machiavellian figure who preferred to rule in shadow, there’s perhaps no better — or…
If you’re considering adding trees or shrubs to your landscape in the coming growing season, winter is the perfect time to do the research you’ll need to find the right kind. “Choosing the right plant in the first place is the best way to reduce maintenance down the road,” said Sharon Yiesla, plant knowledge specialist in the Plant Clinic at The Morton Arboretum in Lisle. “For example, you can save yourself a lot of pruning if you plant a shrub variety that has been bred to stay compact, so it won’t outgrow the available space.” If you invest some time…
The seeds of Black History Month were sown more than 100 years ago in the South Side YMCA at 3763 S. Wabash Ave., Chicago. Carter G. Woodson, a University of Chicago alum, was staying in a room at the Colored YMCA, as it was designated, while manning a booth at the Exposition of Fifty Years of Negro Progress in the nearby Chicago Coliseum. It marked the 50th anniversary of the 13th Amendment ending slavery, and Woodson was selling posters celebrating Black heroes and books about Black history. He also hoped to find a publisher for the doctoral dissertation he’d written…
